I know it in Irish and English and can and do sing it at all games, hand on heart. Niamh (Derry) - Posts: 2397 - 01/07/2009 14:23:22 328773 Link 0 |
As someone who has a keen interest in the Irish language, I have to say I feel a great sense of shame when I am at club championship games in Tyrone. Whenever the national anthem is played before the games I always sing it and everytime I get strange looks from other spectators and once at a game in Coalisland someone actually called me a show off because I knew OUR anthem. i knwo it word for word in English, but I am ashamed to say I only know it phonetically in Irish, bit like Mick McCarthy and Killer Kilbane! Liamwalkinstown (Dublin) - Posts: 8166 - 01/07/2009 14:47:34 328815 Link 0 |
It was drilled into us by our fiercly nationlist School teacher and know it off by heart. Honestly i cant understand why a lot of people dont. Can i ask a honest question? Is it true that the Tyrone panel had to be all taught it the night before the 2003 all Ireland final? paddyogall (Mayo) - Posts: 5110 - 01/07/2009 14:48:22 328817 Link 0 |

no offence lads..not knowing your national anthem in irish and english and the history behind it is a bit of a disgrace..sorry just my opinion.and people who decide to start roaring and shouting while the anthem is still playing and not finished should be ashamed of themselves as well.for an organisation that prides itself on its links with the irish language and our history the least we can do is respect our anthem..i have been to countless irish soccer and rugby matches and the anthem is always given the respect it deserves from start to finish der_bomber (Kildare) - Posts: 149 - 01/07/2009 15:03:28 328853 Link 0 |

Know it word for word Gaeilge agus Bearla. Wasn't though it in school (which wasn't too long ago). Would be ashamed if I didnt know it to be honest. Mick14 (Limerick) - Posts: 766 - 01/07/2009 15:46:31 328933 Link 0 |
The last line is something about 'shoving Seami around the field' Fredthered (Donegal) - Posts: 1144 - 01/07/2009 15:48:54 328936 Link 0 |
I know a fair few boys from coalisland that would hurt a man for anything less than expressing a belief in anything other than staunch nationalism and they wouldn't have a word of Irish. It is a town apart and not reflective of Tyrone. CheFinny (UK) - Posts: 1358 - 01/07/2009 15:56:11 328953 Link 0 |
know it all hand on heart , the most frustrating thing is seein people sing it pitchside , especially when the havnt a note in their head , i prefer the garda / artane band doing the anthem and the crowd singing , instead of singing along with some muppet who wouldnt get an audition at the x factor waynoI (Dublin) - Posts: 13654 - 01/07/2009 15:56:48 328956 Link 0 |
As a boy I always noticed that the roar went up just before the very last line. I know some folk class this as a bit dispectful. However, has anyone noticed that hurling fans roar long before the end, almost three quarters of the way through. Next time you watch\attend hurling match watch out for it. Why is this I wonder?
