I see that Ray Cosgrove has announced his retirement from the inter county scene according to the Hill16 website. Good player in his day who could've been great if he fulfilled his true potential. God knows why he didn't. Think he was right to call it a day thouigh.

That miss against Armagh ruined his confidence. Dublin havent had a proper freetaker since they stopped playing him. Mossy Quinn and Vaughan are not up to scratch.

he had an incredible season in 2002 and really lit up that summer. that free in the all ireland semi ruined his confidence as was pointed out before and as a forward that is one of the most important things. the dubs havnt been as close to all ireland glory since that.

Whoa there RMDrive - we have just had an Anthony Rainbow thread which you didn't suggest for the Kildare pages, David Collins (injury!) thread, Padraig Joyce thread, Ciaran McDonald - at least two threads, Brendan DV thread - which you didn't suggest for your own Donegal pages surprisingly, a Barry Owens thread and many more. Is it not ok to seek views from other counties re a Dublin player?? At least you seem to be consistent in your inconsistency! :-)

With regard to this thread re Ray Cosgrave (which should really be on the Dublin pages :-) ) I think he was a confidence player. When he was good he was very good (unfortunately only one season (2002) when he bagged 6-23) but despite many opportunties he never hit these heights again!

I hate to say it lads but if missing one lousy free finished him as a top player then he wasnt good enough to start with. The best players can miss chances and just pick themselves up and keep going. I dont mean to have a go at the fella or anything, have met him a few times and he's a good bloke. And he never took part in the ungamely antics of some his colleagues. I think there's a bit of mayo blood in him. Isn't one of his parents from mayo??? That would explain the good manners and general good behaviour of the guy. Best of luck in the future Ray

was never a real fan of ray,even tho he was good that year.seen him play against us twice in the leinster club,didnt stand out.
however, one thing i will say about the man was that he didnt bottle the free he took against armagh. that wasnt easy for a right footer.to be honest i thought he would sky it!! unlike a certain player from a certain county not far from offaly and meath....
he was also right to leave,although i doubt he would ever have been picked again after the league final

He only really had one good year (though he was outstanding that particular year admittedly). Dont know what happened to him after that. Against us in the semi final two years ago he was like a different player to the one who terrorised defenses in 2002. I heard he's a decent fella anyway and the best of luck to him

Its wrong to put the years since 02 ( or whenever) down to that free. Perhaps he should have been given more playing time since...still thinkin he has more to offer than a lot of Dublin forwards with the exception of 1 or 2. Fair play to him tho...a lot of lads would take your arm if you offered them on year like that. Best of luck to him

Vaughan is hot and cold he missed a free against westmeath an u12 would have put over, hes pretty much the same standard that cosgrove was but a bit more cocky with his peroxide hair so might not lose the confidence as easy.

Always liked cosgrove though felt so sorry for him against armagh but i was delighted armagh won. The game is missing a bit of class without Ray but good luck to him in the future.

Cosgrove had one good year, how many times has he appeared as a sub only to be taken off again. My biggesy dislike of him is he was the first dub to really start the waving and pointing at the crowd which the current crop of dublin players are engaged in. This antics has now turned genuine people against Dublin
