Ulster football is boring.

New York and Mayo was a 0-10 to 2-19 cracker by all accounts but apparently not a patch on the blood rush of London 1-7 Galway 1-18 or Mayo 3-18 Roscommon 0-7

Good fella: "Does this mean football has been terrible for 125 years?

Cue some hurling fundamentalist saying yes!"

Took the words out of my mouth, but then I saw your kind comments about our hurlers so I will not pursue it!.... Okay I will. There have been some dreadful football matches this year but last year it was hurling that was under the cosh because of the alleged lack of competition for KK. The Mayo game was just a case of one team not showing up against one that was expecting a challenge and blew them away so I wouldn't put too much on that. Monaghan/Derry was awful but Armagh and Tyrone was excellent game. Dublin/Meath likewise hardly rivetting and error prone and didn't see enough of Derry/Tyrone to make a judgment although I would tend to concur with those who say that Derry attempted to beat tyrone in a certain manner that didn't work. But there will be good games again although probably rarer than the bad ones unfortunately and that has a lot to do with the negative attitude of too many teams and players and that is not confined to any province.

Finally, of course hurling is still the better game!

Hurlingdub a fair enough assessment on your part. I still firmly believe that the games get better as the championship reaches its latter stages and I expect this year to be no different.

Some of the criticism on this thread by some posters is at best silly given that the championship it still at the earlier rounds.

Ps Lets hope the Dubs put it up to Kilkenny, said a few years ago that they could win Liam before Sam!!!!

The criticism by some posters is laughable, if any of you'se actually played football to inter-county standard them you your comments would perhaps have some merit. In essence you are the typical 'hurlers on the ditch', capable of criticism but of very little else. Take a look back over matches in the past, the standards of these games were of a similar nature to nowadays. Does this mean football has been terrible for 125 years?

The problem is that the posters here are also the paying punters. If the games are to survive then the teams will have to entertain. Afterall this is an entertainment industry and people won't pay 30euro in to see matches like Tyrone-Derry, Meath-Dublin or Mayo-Rosscommon. This is a simple fact and all punters will decide this not only the ones who have played inter-county. Poor standards in a bygone era was probably more acceptable then as the GAA was not competng against satelite tv, rugby and operating in a time when people are hard pushed to pay 30-45 euro into see a 70 minute bore. Also players train like pros now and eat like rabbits so they should be primed to produce quality games, IMO.

Lads put yourself in the team(s) shoes-a wins a win and I doubt they care how they get it...

ulster football is as good as it gets. although i have to say the four provincial championships have been very poor this year. the hurling championships have been an entirely different prospect might i add, but that's for a different thread. ulster football isn't boring. i think people have came to expect great tussles from tyrone and armagh. armagh are a different animal to what they were three or four years ago, a team in transition. i agree however that this years ulster championship won't be remembered for years to come as a classic, the only saving grace would be if antrim got to the ulster final that would be a good news story.

Hokeypokey I cant understand a fella turnin off any chapionship match. We wait all year for it to start for cryin out loud. Personally I try to get in as many matches as possible , t.v or live. I wouldnt care if it was New York v London. Sure aren`t they all doin their best , and a damn sight more than you and me. Have a heart , cheer every county on. They all have as much vested interest as each other.

No I will not knock Ulster football. I will never knock any match or team where there is passion.Maybe we dont get the perfect game but I watch every match and judge them differently. You will have a free flowing open contest where marking is loose to a tight close encounter. Each one has its merit.Looking forward to next weekend's matches.

lets face it the provincial championships are failing and outdated, have an open draw or get rid of the bloddy qualifiers!

Possibly, or maybe, as has been suggested on this board previously, some sort of champions league format. But you are right, the provincials are getting staler every year, I mean, with all due respect to Cavan & Antrim, Tyrone should win Ulster this year, meaning that since 1999, the title has been shared between Tyrone & Armagh. Hell even connacht cant boast a record similar to that over the last 10 years!
