Good man Leroy, Old Mother England has looked after us well all right, from The Penal Laws to the Famine to the Black and Tans and the B Specials. We have indeed a lot to be thankful to her for, Before ye all jump in with "living in the past" jibes. Yes I know its different times and we must move on but our history is what has made us what we are, and we should never forget it. corkcelt (Cork) - Posts: 4388 - 19/06/2009 16:18:59 317231 Link 0 |

like it or lump it lads, but because of lads like corkcelt, meathboy and 34_3_2_1 we shall never have a united Ireland, how in God could we convince Northern Unionists into a United ireland with their one dimensional views, what they fail to forget is that 1 million people in Northern ireland class themselves as British, Partition at the time was the only alternative that could have a peaceful outcome, forgive me for being a realist but maybe its because i am a "west Brit" as i have been called here for having an alternative view. a possible next step could be re-partition but the idea that there will be a united ireland where we all dance off holding hands into the sunset is laughable. If there will be a united ireland there will have to be serious consessions on both sides. and also again like it or lump its guys like me with an alternative view that could bring about a United ireland, not the people i have mentioned above paddyogall (Mayo) - Posts: 5110 - 19/06/2009 23:28:57 317543 Link 0 |
the bitterness on here is surreal my family come from ireland and thankgod .but they dont share your views corkcelt maybe your one of the lucky ones that did'nt have to leave.ah well thats life leroy (UK) - Posts: 223 - 20/06/2009 09:56:14 317611 Link 0 |
Strangely enough leroy, i'm not a bitter person at all. I can truely say there is not one person in this world that I hate and few enough that I dislike. I hate some things that people do ( e.g. George Bush) but not the person. I get on fine with English people and have no problem with them at all. However I am intensely proud of my own country, my traditions, my forefathers and the people who gave their lives for Irish Freedom. It is not a question of mixing Green with Orange until we are all a watered down shade of pale yellow that is needed to unify the country as Paddy appears to propogate. Let the Orange man be what he is, let him have his tradition and culture and let people like me and 32.4.1 and Meath Bhoy have ours. What we need is an extension of the existing power sharing arrangements in the North to be expanded into an All Ireland dimension with built in guarantees and safeguards for all sections of the community. I threaten nobody but I will always defend my own traditions and the people who share my views whether they be fellow Glasgow Celtic Supporters or like minded GAA Supporters. In particular I will always stand by my fellow Gaels from the 6 Counties. corkcelt (Cork) - Posts: 4388 - 20/06/2009 11:14:47 317641 Link 0 |

Corkcelt does indeed post some good comments on here. I have often found that many Cork people often tend to be more sympathetic and understanding of Northern Nationalists. For a county at the other end of the country that's remarkable, maybe the fact that Cork suffered a lot under British rule and during the Civil War has something to do with it. Cork hurling people have always been very good to Ulster club and county sides as well with coaching, challenge matches, exchange visits etc. I agree, I have no problem with anyone's Unionist identity or culture JUST don't make or portray my Irish Nationalist identity as something to be ashamed or guilty of. Why do so many people think that we as nationalists must respect the unionist culture and desire to maintain the union with a foreign country but do not see our inherent right to desire a united ireland and the right to our culture. Where in the world does it say that we can draw lines on maps to ensure that we will be given the democracy that we like and want. Only in british democracies does this happen. So ultimately there is no such thing as democracy for those that the british decide wish to be the minority. derryman (Derry) - Posts: 3246 - 20/06/2009 17:39:25 317819 Link 0 |
