Few rivalries as big as Leitrim and Roscommon

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Like I said all the attention will be on the Armagh and Tyrone game and rightly so as they have won every ulster title since 1998 and 4 all-irelands between them. I was pointing out the fact that few people outside Leitrim and Roscommon will know the intense rivalry of the 2 teams and I know that every person will say their countys rivalry is greater but everyone knows about kerry v cork, Dublin v Meath and Tyrone v Armagh. My point is that just because neither team will win an all-ireland or even connacht (not this year anyway) It does not take away from how big this game is. Il go as far as 2 say it will be as exciting as Armagh v Tyrone but without the hype and the coverage.

As a Connacht man I am more than aware of the rivalry between Roscommon and Leitrim. The talk in our province is usually about the big two of Galway v Mayo but don't think for a moment that your clash slips completely under the radar. I for one am looking forward to it.

Rosfan with the greatest of respect, whatever people might say about Ulster or Leinster football, Connaught football will never hold the imagination of GAA fans. Apart from Galway there is no team there worth a damn. I remember Pat 'Puke' Spillane saying that he would make any student who misbehaved in class the next monday watch the game from the previous sunday between Sligo and Leitrim (I think that was the paring but it was Connaught anyway and Sligo were involved). So yes I have the utmost respect for the intensity of the local rivalry you mention but its commonplace all over the GAA so not really noteworthy in that respect.

Real Louth fan County: Louth Posts: 1643 294012 25/05/2009 19:20:35 Rosfan County: Roscommon Posts: 121 293430 I know people say that its a Galway v Mayo and that Connacht is a 2 horse race but there are few rivalries as big as Roscommon and Leitrim. That may well be but it is also the case with many clubs around the country but I'm afraid there is nothing particularly special about your rivalry. The limelight will rightly be on Armagh V Tyrone as it will also soon be on Kerry V Cork, Galway V Mayo and God help us even the drubs V mead! Sorry dude but nobody cares! RLF-You just reminded me why i dont bother posting messages on the main board and why many decent posters have left it. comments from you are two a penny. you probably dont even know where the counties are on a map. who are louth rivals with?? no one cas no one could care less about ye.

I think Meath Dublin is a major rivalry, but in fairness every local derby is massive. No county wants to lose to their close neighour. I think Roscommon will beat Leitrim, do they have many of the All-Ireland winning minors from a few years ago on the panel?

Well I do not know the team but I would imagine there will be at least 4 on the team sunday with another 4 or 5 on the bench. Watch out for Conor Devanney. He can be the catalyst for a win if he plays to his potential.

Hows Donal Shine playing these times, he was untouchable the time the Rossies won the minor, destroying Tommy Walsh in the process if I remember correctly!

Yes your right he did but its mixed these days in my opinion. On his day he is an excellent free-taker and an excellent footballer but I think sometimes the occasion may get to him i.e. missing a 13m free in the u21 connacht semi-final against mayo in extra time. However overall I rate him highly and hopefully if he plays on sunday he will play like I know he can

Dublin vs Meath ... have ye forgotten '91 already ... that was just the pinnacle of the rivalry which has gone on for decades.

Must be hard for the Royals what with Navan now effectively being a "Blue" town.

They'll be burning flags next the rivalry is so intense !!

Only witnessed the highlights unfortunately but was a great game as far as I could see. The highlights looked better than the Tyrone versus Armagh (not claiming they are better teams obviously) and that game wasn't a bad one.

Fine post Rosfan and well done yesterday - a bitter pill to swalow, but life and living goes on and good luck to ye all.
As a Connacht man and a GAA man a word of advice, I'd ignore posts by RLF.......trust me.
