It was obvious yesterday that derry's true colours came to the fore in spite of what their apologists in the shape of brolly and tohill might say...but if the ref and officials had done their jobs right then maybe we would have seen doherty, mccloy and gillis all lined along with hanratty and of course mullan. the referreing was pathetic in my opinion with eoin bradley allowed to commit 6 fouls pulling and dragging monaghan defenders to the ground...not even a warning from the ref..pathetic!! Your a hilarious lad. Think you might be a bit scared of playing derry. And think you might hate derry a wee bit too. McMenamin and Gormley are the two cleanest players in ireland. Aye rite!! gerrard820 (Derry) - Posts: 64 - 26/05/2009 09:04:48 293908 Link 0 |
Very poor game but I think anyone with half a brain knew this was going to be the case. This is the 3rd year in a row these two counties have met in the Championship and there was always going to be bad blood. The same has happened between the likes of Kerry and Cork when they meet each other on a constant basis. Goodfella, Tir (None) - Posts: 1652 - 26/05/2009 09:48:00 293936 Link 0 |

Second that mossbags. I know which game I'll be watching on Sunday. hurlingdub (Dublin) - Posts: 6978 - 26/05/2009 12:49:11 294163 Link 0 |
i agree that sundays game was a horrible game but i think to say there is a fundamental sickness in ulster football is very hasty. i expect a great game this weekend and lets hold off until that. sundays game was a match between two teams with lots of bad blood who both wanted to intimidate each other and took it too far. the games over and i think the sooner we forget about it the better. after heavy suspensions of course galballygael23 (Tyrone) - Posts: 235 - 26/05/2009 13:08:41 294199 Link 0 |
There does appear to be something in some Ulster rivalries that brings out the worst of some fellas natures. I think the management team have a lot to answer for . That was ugly stuff yesterday but it doesnt seem to happen when the same two teams play outside the province. I was appalled by the antics of some guys yesterday but live in hope that the next sets of matches will improve our current standing in the rest of the country. gaelantrim (Antrim) - Posts: 1616 - 26/05/2009 13:49:56 294266 Link 0 |

there is a lot of reasonable comments on this thread by ulstermen/women and by reading them they seem to want to demonstrate the point that ulster football is extreamely passionate, pariochial and tribal and therefore is intense and competitive and sometimes this spills over like it did at the weekend...i support these comments and the fact remains that ulster has nine counties and about six of them have a somewhat reasonable chance of winning the title and this makes games tighter and more competitive and is unprecadented in ireland at the moment with the exception of the munster hurling championship...id imagine if leinster got back to its glory days with meath, kildare, laois, offaly playing well it would be more or less the same and not just dublin dominating...the point id like to make is and its just my own opinion that in order for teams (especially in ulster) to shorten the odds on defeat they have adopted and perfected a style of play that encourages bunching and large amounts of players in small parts of the pitch if one catches my drift...this system which is ultra defensive in mindset is designed to stifle the oppositions best players and disrupt the natural flow of the game(which arguablly is clean ball caught in midfield with quality ball into the inside forwards to score)...this is the reason in my opinion for the so called anti ulster threads, its because if you take local emotions out of it and view it from a neutral viewpoint the game becomes unattractive, stagnant and boring...from a ulster county point of view its all about wining and i respect that but the rules of the game still has to be enforced and some new trends in the method of playing are not really working to be honest....especially a player catching a high clean ball in midfiels etc and landing with 6 players around him and been penalised for overcarrying when its obviously impossible for him to offload....thats my lot lads... seany16 (Dublin) - Posts: 1658 - 27/05/2009 00:10:59 295013 Link 0 |
In all fairness Mossbags what did you expect from the match on Sunday. The majority of Ulster matches dont need to use footballs. Playing open attractive football is quite an alien concept to Ulster football counties. It was an absolute disgrace to watch and would be slow to let my children watch an Ulster game again. They would be better off watching Ricky Hatton. kingdomfan (Kerry) - Posts: 393 - 27/05/2009 10:30:20 295146 Link 0 |
Nobody is asking you to watch the Ulster Championship. I wouldn't watch the Connact Championship or the Munster Championship bar Kerry V Cork. Watch whatever you like, it is called free will. superfarney (Monaghan) - Posts: 260 - 27/05/2009 11:10:49 295195 Link 0 |

you are right thykingdomcome, when you say how awful that kneeing incident to the groin, no kerry player would do that. they use their hands instead and grab the groin. these things happen from time to time in championship football, they are not to be condoned, but after the whistle the players, generally, shake hands and get on with it. no matter how hard the fight is during the game the mutual respect is there after the game for all to see. warriors alike. win loose or draw. pig.ignorant (Derry) - Posts: 655 - 27/05/2009 21:17:28 295952 Link 0 |
