Excellent club player - Never made it for county!

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Following on from the under-rated club player thread - which players over the years where stars week in week out for their club but could never really perform at the highest level with the county when given the chance! Cokey Quinn from Moortown springs to mind! Paddy McShane from Coalisland - any other suggestions?

Kevin cunningham- played with omagh stendas. one of the most ferocious defenders ive ever seen. he played on 1998 omagh county finalist team, should have strolled on the 1997 minor team but was overlooked, was overlooked for the under 21's and for seniors.

The Monk - We know you think Caolan is great - but the specific theme i mean is players who have been given the chance by the county but for one reason or another didnt perform! I remember watching Paddy McShane for Coalisland in the mid 1990s and he was unmarkable in some game - just couldnt make the step up! Danny Barr from Dungannon is another example, one of the best fielders of the ball i've seen at club level - but couldnt make the step up!

Serious post this time though for players very loyal to their home clubs and never made it for the county - Terry McDermott from Greencastle and two other guys from the Kildress club that regularly get a mention on these boards Fran Loughran and Des Tracey.

Brian McGuckin of Edendork/Ballinderry also deserves a mention.

This is a very interesting topic. Every club will have players that they feel are good enough to play county football but when you see men who cintinually at the top of the pile in the county and never played for Tyrone people ask questions. In my own club a numbers of players were good enough to play senior football but never attended trials etc.
Colm McGurk, Mark Donnelly, Gaby McCallan and Ciaran McAleer spring to mind. Gaby and Ciaran have been on the past 3 club teams of the year I think. If Finney Magill keeps this years form up he could play as well.

Johnny & Ronan Lafferty - Urney
Peter Armour - Stewartstown
Martin Mc Creesh - Rock
Raymond McGinley - Eskra
Mark Donnelly - Carrickmore
Des Treacy - Kildress

All great club players, have they missed their chance to play county?
Unless your around the top of division one or your club has a good run in the championship where are your ever going to get noticed? Should be some sort of trials excluding the main players who are definites e.g. cavanagh, gormley and ricey etc, and pick a the people who stand out from this? Gives players who developed later or who may have had an injury stricken youth another bite at the cherry of inter county football! I'm sure all of us believe that we have leaders within our clubs that are good enough to be there!

Id agree with alot of these players esp enda Clarke from greencastle great player but they all may be fit for senior county football and would prob make most over county teams but M Harte has a team that works well together
