i reckon if mayo played in the ulster championship they would have anothercoupla all irelands, they are far too clean, mabye now with t mortimer as captain the rest will throw their muscle around like him mucker (Donegal) - Posts: 479 - 05/05/2009 13:30:32 275158 Link 0 |
If Mayo were in the Ulster Championship they wouldn't have won much as they haven't been physical enough. They'd just have become another Down or Donegal. Mortimor could be a good choice of captain and they have plenty of strength on this year's panel with Aidan O'Shea, Billy Joe Padden, Austin O'Malley, Ger Cafferkey, Ronan McGarrity etc. eiregocroi (Cork) - Posts: 201 - 05/05/2009 15:54:41 275322 Link 0 |

If mayo played in the ulster championship they would have had 4 or 5 players beheaded over the last few years. In the west we play football. Ulster would be no place to try the likes of that whiterbannnas (Mayo) - Posts: 2441 - 05/05/2009 16:15:27 275346 Link 0 |
Well whatever type of football you are playing WB maybe its time to change it, hasnt brought much success! sean og (Armagh) - Posts: 1073 - 05/05/2009 16:23:55 275356 Link 0 |
Honestly sean og, i would rather never win an all-ireland than to resort to physical and verbal abuse in order to win one. I mean that. The only way to win an all-ireland is to be the best footballing team in the country and to go out and prove it. How can there be any satisfaction in it otherwise. Go out and box your way to an all-ireland? Not for me whiterbannnas (Mayo) - Posts: 2441 - 05/05/2009 16:32:23 275365 Link 0 |

Well WB I believe that your wish will be granted, long may Mayo sit on the sidelines, slapping each other on the back as you stick by your 'principles' and tut tutting as those barbarians from the North head to Dublin in August/September with only one thing in mind, winning the Sam Maguire. Ha, Mayo & their principles, don't make me laugh! brendtheredhand (Tyrone) - Posts: 10897 - 05/05/2009 20:54:51 275611 Link 0 |
Mayo, and the recent Laois team, were a joy to watch. Pure football, and their unwillingness to "cheat" did count against them. patrique (Antrim) - Posts: 13709 - 05/05/2009 21:06:30 275624 Link 0 |
Mayo are a bit like boxing sparring partners. They will test you for a wee while but don't have the class or staying power for the real deal. Give them their dues because listening to some of their posters on HS you would think they were winning SAM every year. They are also like one of those wee toy guns that shoots out a flag that says "POP" when you pull the trigger. It wasn't pretty watching Meath batter them all over Croker in 96. They didn't have the stomach for it and it showed. Ulsterman (Antrim) - Posts: 9819 - 05/05/2009 22:35:43 275700 Link 0 |
mayo should tak da game as it comes, like last yr when armagh got physical wid wexford, wexford gave it bak twice as hard, instead of running into corners wen da game gets tough!!!!!! airmax (UK) - Posts: 56 - 05/05/2009 22:36:33 275702 Link 0 |
I think the problem with the Mayo footballers is that they have more players with their hair tyed up or with bleach jobs done than their ladies team. Actually, the ladies team would probably beat them off the field. Marty Morrissey (Donegal) - Posts: 29 - 05/05/2009 23:08:43 275751 Link 0 |

To some of the tyrone posters above, the last few minutes of our match against ye last year ye resorted to holding onto the ball to eat up time, not very sportsmanlike but it got ye where ye wanted to be! We have beaten ye plenty of times in recent years, but as the saying goes - nice guys finish last. Saying that we are never far off the pace and our day will come.............soon...........I hope! Ulsterman, what are you on??? And your from where??? Antrim,,what do you play in Antrim??? If Mayo are a sparring partner, then Antrim must be the spit bucket carriers, always on the outside and far away from the action. Meath v Mayo 1996, I dont know what game you were watching, we lost the match for two reasons, 1. a goalie who couldnt judge a bouncing ball, 2. John Casey cracked under pressure. "Meath beat us around the place",,you can ask any of the Meath boys that day like McDermott, Fay, McGuinness, Giles and Gerathy who they beat around the place in Croke Park?, they wont mention the names of David Brady, Colm Macmenamin, Noel Connelly, Ken Mortimor, Ray Dempsey and PJ Loftus, well put it this way, the Meath keeper Conor Martin will never forget David Brady.........watch the replays lad. But in saying that, the current Mayo team are too nice, the above mantioned players, who are from my playing era, and some of who i know personally had what was needed, hatred for their opponents, agression, power, strenght and they were all handy footballers.................these guys are well respected and well missed in Mayo these days. There have been times when iv been watching tyrone that i am so thankful i am not from there. Take for example the image of mcmahon screaming in walshes face in the AI final last year (think he ahd just won a free of him or he had missed a shot). OK they won, but they're slowly losing respect along the way. Derry_ledd (Derry) - Posts: 2093 - 06/05/2009 09:14:13 275875 Link 0 |
