The soccer that we see on TV is over-rated and over-hyped. On several occasions I have switched over at half-time in a televised Allianz league game to watch some soccer during the break. Disaster. There is more entertainment in 10 minutes of a bad gaelic match than most soccer games. I cannot understand how people can get excited by a group of over paid mercenaries masquerading as soccer players.

In case I didnt make myself clear.............. give me gaelic football anytime

RE:HIPSTER give it a go then my friend, you will find that anyone can kick a pass sideways or backwards to another unmarked pleb with his hands in his pockets.that is what roy keane did his whole career, and was considered one of the best players of his time.it is not that difficult.if you watch soccer, count the number of passes that go forwards and count the number of passes that go sideways/backwards.50/50??i would say 40/60.

I hate soccer,it is boring lethargic tripe.people say that soccer players are overpaid, well my view is that they shouldnt be paid at all.ronaldo is considered extremely skillfull, well i for one dont think he is,it is that most other soccer players have no skill at all and can do nothing that any of the rest of us couldnt do ourselves.

Spot on, I have been saying this for years. I like to see people who can do things that I can't, such as Messi, Robinho, Kaka and the like.

Give me six months training and I can replicate Roy Keane and all the other mid foelders, albeit with a lot more skill.

There however lies my downfall. In the premiership skill is frowned upon.

lads anyone who says soccer isnt skillfull either has their 'gaa' hat on and wont admit to liking another sport, the pitch looks alot bigger on tv there is no space at a high level. gaelic is a great sport by all means but that doesnt mean other sports cant be difficult too

how is there no space at a high level?are you for real?alot of times teams play offside at the halfway line!have you ever seen a soccer kickout from overhead?all 20 outfield players usually within 20 yards either side of the hw line.how much space does this leave back to the goalies?soccer is pure negative dung, the better teams are the rich teams with the money, titles everywhere are bought!as i have said already, more passes go sideways/backwards rather than forwards?also, teams everywhere seem to be obsessed with getting the ball out to the corner flag .how many times do you see a player with a chance of a shot on the edge of the box,and instead of taking it on he kicks it out to a lad running up the wing?time after time!this defies belief, what is the percentage of goals that are actually scored with the head?very, very low. What really annoys me are irish lads that go around with the english soccer jerseys on and talk about "we" and "us",and talk passionately about "their" team.where is their big alliegance to the city of liverpool or manchester??it both **** me off and puzzles me. I havnt even mentioned yet the state of alot ot them pro soccer players.the way they throw themselves around, dive to the ground with the slightest hint of contact, any time i see that i feel embarrassed for the players themselves that are doing it.its disgusting.commentaters sometimes say that the player should be ashamed of themseves for their behaviour, but sure every one of them does it!soccer should not be classified as a contact sport. People are entitled to watch what they want, but im sorry,if you get excitement out of watching a soccer match then i think you have a pretty sad life.when it comes to soccer versus the "real" football,it isnt even a debate. One more point, earlier in the week we had the "champions" league semi-finals,how many goals were scored over the two games?one.thats one goal in 3 hours of play.what wee-in-your-pants,nail-biting stuff....

Whiterbannnas how is soccer more entertaining? Dont get me wrong i follow soccer but you will never watch a hurling or football game that finishes scoreless. Gaa games for entertainment are far superior.

I'm fairly new on to these forums lads so bare with me. Just a few points on this topic. I think the soccer match that started off this forum wouldn't have been the greatest advert for that sport but maybe if the forum was started today after watching Barcelona and Real Madrid, people might think differently, plus Leinsters performance against Munster might get a few anti rugby people thinking likewise.

I played football and soccer, I never played hurling or rugby but like watching all these sports. My thinking along the lines of skill in soccer and Gaelic football would be that you wouldn't need great skills to be in the full back line in Gaelic football or a defender in soccer but the closer you get to the oppositions goal the more skill you would need. (I'm assuming here that all Gaelic players can do the basics of catching, kicking and passing and soccer players can control, pass and head).

I would see a lot of positional similarities in both sports...... a full back in soccer has got to get up to support the midfield and attack, the same as a wing back in Gaelic; midfielders support both attack and defence in both sports and as for the Roy Keane roll in soccer, is it not similar to a centre back's roll in Gaelic football ( those of you who think you could have done what Roy Keane did for so long, well if you haven't got at least £40 million in your bank account, you have wasted both your talents and your life, maybe he just made it look easy guys). Would the Gooch have more attacking skill than Damien Duff or would Sean Marty Lockhart have mastered the art of defending more than Richard Dunne. I don't think we can compare really. Maybe we should ask Kevin Moran

I dont think we should be disrespectful of the other sports here, just accept them. If you don't like them don't watch them but don't disrespect them. I think some people fear that with the opening of Croke park and the extra tv coverage of other sports that the GAA will lose out some how. I don't see this happening. Every sport will have their golden period like the rugby is having now and that soccer had under Jack Charlton but the GAA has always come back strong and always will. The GAA has survived world wars, civil wars and the troubles in the north and still flourish.

And finally lads, about the cheating and the diving, sure there is cheating in every sport. Every one in this country still smiles at Maradona's fisted goal against England in the 86 world cup but those of us that support Munster in rugby would lynch Neil Back for what he did to Peter Stringer in the 2000 Heineken Cup final and you can be sure that across the GAA field every weekend there is someone bending the rules to favour his club. As for diving, there is plenty of that in the GAA but we dont call it diving, we call it playing for the free.

RE:CELTIKEEPER 1st of all,why are you comparing the skill of someone like colm cooper to damien duff,or comparing sm lockhart to richard dunne?of course you cant really compare, thats just daft, who is trying to compare?we are not debating the skills of each game here, the thread is about which sport is better.
You also say that these replies are being based on a certain real madrid, barcelona game?well speaking for myself,my posts certainly werent, they were posted on my view of soccer in general, and what a farce of a game i think it is.
You then mention that diving goes on in every sport, and gaa in particular.yes it does, but i think "obviously" it does be on a completly different level than what happens time after time in "every" game of soccer.we are talking about lads going down like there is a sniper in the crowd, rolling about, holding their heads even though it is obvious that they werent touched.THIS HAPPENS CONSTANTLY IN SOCCER.you cannot honestly compare gaa to soccer when it comes to that!
Finally my last point is about when you say that we shouldnt be "disrespectful" to other sports, just accept them.we are having a debate on which sport is better, and giving our reasons on why we like or dont like one or the other.respect and disrespect doesnt come into it at all,its just a topic...
To sum up,i think your post was neither here nor there,i dont think you really made any valid points.

RE: ENDA.MULDOON The guy who posted the topic asked for "Any opinions?" and that was mine. I'm not too worried what you think about my opinion or whether you think I have a valid point or not. It was a general response to the question posted at the start of the debate.

The guy also stated that he thought that soccer was the more difficult game technically, tactically and positionally and to me skill levels would be some where involved in those three areas. Anyway who am I to question you on the skills in soccer, you are obviously Derry's version of Roy Keane

Maybe you are still upset over lasts weeks game!! Cheer up it was only the league.

Soccer lads is skilful, but we only see the premiership which is all about power.

Look at Robinho, Kaka, Iniesta, Xavi, Ronaldo, Messi and people like that. A lot of skill, but that skill is mostly displayed by Argentina, Brazil, Barcelona and sometimes Italy.

We are so used to watching the premiership we have come to accept "excitement" as better than skill.

Not for me.

Enda we will draw a line under it. I didnt come on here to be getting involved in spats. I enjoy reading the different point of views on each topic and have been for months, before sending in my own opinion. We will just have to agree to disagree
