Supporting unusual British teams

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Yeah Breffini. Depression beginning to set in. If by some miracle we managed to finish outside the bottom 3, we will be deducted 10 points thus sending us down. But if Saints dont finish outside the bottom 3 and are relegated anyway.......we start next season -10 points!!!!! HOW IS THAT FAIR.
Unless someone buys the club soon, they will go out of existance.

I lived in huddersfield for five years so have a fondness for huddersfield town, the terriers. The youth coach there, gerry murphy, is irish and hance brings in lots of young iriah talent to give them a chance . Always drank in the irish centre in the town, true gentleman.

Friend of mine supports Charlton. He's told me he will continue to, despite League One.

I had a strong liking for Peterborough United many years ago. The interest stemmed from the fact that my hero was an Irish International called Noel Cantwell who became Manager of the Club for a few years. As a non-league Club they had a few great FA Cup runs, then when they entered the football league they got two quick promotions, however they were found guilty of some wage irregularities and were dumped back into the old 4th Division. I can't really say I'm a fan but I do keep an eye out every week for their results, and was pleased to see this weekend that they have again secured 2 consecutive promotions and will be playing in the Championship next year. I am as any who read my posts might know a devoted Glasgow Celtic suppporter, but regardless of what patrique might say as far as I'm concerned I don't class them as a British Club.

My brother supports Ipswich and has done for all his life. Expect the Ipswich bandwagon to fill up over the summer.

I know a fair few older people who would have worked in London years ago and support teams like Watford, West Ham, Charlton and Fulham.

sure my dad and another lad i know support wolverhampton wonderers.

the last time they won anything was the league and cup double in 1959 (the year he was born). At least he has seen a coca cola championship now i suppose.

Hipster Glasgow Rangers one of the most successful teams in Britain

In terms of the number of trophies won they are the most successful team in Britain.
Do you really support them. I know a couple of Rangers fans. Don't really understand it given the songs they sing about the famine, being up to their knees in fenian blood etc. Don't think anyone with an Irish accent would be very welcome in any of the Rangers pubs in Glasgow.

I know thousands of people with Irish accents who support Rangers and are welcome in Glasgow bars.

Haha Mossbags, Forest supporter here as well, I loved brian Clough he was hte main reason I stopped supporting Man U and switched to Forest at age 10. Unfortunately for me, Forest went downhill badly while Utd soared.

On a bright note, it looks like we might avoid relegation to league 1 this yr - fingers crossed!!!

Howya Stranmills. I loved and still love Ol big head, the greatest football manager of all time. I'd have become a Forest supporter somewhere between the age of 8-10 back when they weren't great but would still be a million miles higher up the pecking order than they are to-day. Im 29 now so this gives some credence to Patriques (quite interesting) theory but i remember clearly the boasting at the time of Liverpool fans(later to be eclippsed by UTD 'fans') and being fainty repelled so I had no interest in ever supporting them. As well as that I loved the players at the time Stuart Pearce, Des Walker, the mighty Steve Chettle etc.
Their decline since has been dramatic and painful but never once has it crossed my mind to start supporting a different club. Wonder if Liverpool,Man Utd, Chelsea went into such a steep decline how many of their supporters would stick with them like the Forest fans have.

And yes we have managed to avoid being relegated straight back into Div 1. Happy days, European glory again is surely just around the corner now.

I know. No harm done, just being my usual mischievous self.

Sorry. Mind you at one time under Souness I was going to support Rangers for purely sectarian reasons as the whole team owed allegiance to Rome as they say.

re: steviewonder

Now bar United and Liverpool fans, I boast that I can tell someone's approximate age by the team they support.

Most kids support the team that first registers on their consciousness. It usually registers because they are winning things and big in the media. They are usually about 8-10 when this happens.

So if you meat a Villa supporter. They won the league in 1981 and European Cup in 1982 so chances are the supporter was born around 1972-74.

You would be amazed at how often this simple rule works with Everton, Leeds, Villa, certainly Blackburn and teams like that.

well i'm a villa supporter 100% and i'm only 18. i am the only person in my familly to support them so i didn't follow my father either.

then why support villa?? it seems pretty random tos support them doesnt it??
theres a lad im in college with that supports villa aswel...hes a musty wee lad tho...
