'Fredthered' this board is for true G.A.A people who want discuss important topics in a sensible way. Bogmanstand (Cavan) - Posts: 41 - 21/04/2009 22:23:38 264625 Link 0 |
I wouldn't discount the big toe approach just like that Bogmanstand.Fredthered has something there especially if the ball is a wee bit on the soft side. Personally the sound that this method makes when toe meets ball is like music to my ears. God be with the days. squidword (Louth) - Posts: 2897 - 21/04/2009 23:41:10 264758 Link 0 |
Bogmanstand----how to take a free kick is hardly what i would call an important topic been discussed on here. It would be an important topic in a coaching seminar but not on a messageboard. It was a tounge in cheek comment. What will the next important topic be about. WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO HANG THE NETS or WHAT IS THE BEST WAY FOR THE REFEREE TO THROW IN THE BALL. Squidword, yes I'll have to bow to you there. Power is of course a contributory factor. But just like in golf the sweeter the hit and the longer the club, the further the golfball will go without adding any extra added power. Likewise the sweeter the hit and the longer the leg (and the more extended the leg) the further the football will travel. thykingdomcome (Kerry) - Posts: 1206 - 22/04/2009 11:59:22 265029 Link 0 |
Charlie Redmond used to always to take seven paces backways. then three to the left. Then, licked his hands followed by two more steps to the left just as he began his run-up. It usually worked. Trevor Giles had a unique enough method too, he always fixed his jersey at the shoulders, just before he took a free. Loyal2TheRoyal (Meath) - Posts: 4522 - 22/04/2009 18:10:13 265493 Link 0 |

Place the ball so the lining on it is square with the posts. then by looking at the ball you'll know exactly where the posts are....... then get your big toe and put it through the ball. Derry_ledd (Derry) - Posts: 2093 - 23/04/2009 20:29:45 266748 Link 0 |

Place the ball on the ground, nip facing down. Fix your socks. Make sure tongue of your boot is straight. Standing foot should be next to the ball and your kicking foot behind - toe to the ground, heel slightly lifted. Take a long hard look at the posts. Big deep breath - only one. Start your walk back. Take 5 or 6 long strides back, slowly, and 2 or 3 to the side. Bend your knees. Hands must be between your knees cupped. Not interlocked, cupped. Very, very slowly look up at the top of the posts. Pick a target - the loner on the hill. To start your run up correctly you need to take half a step back before you move forward. Easy does it. Concentrate on nothing but the strike. If you make the right connection the ball should do the rest.... Plink (Monaghan) - Posts: 110 - 24/04/2009 00:12:57 266969 Link 0 |
there is probably no actual tried and tested method which everyone can use, but the follow through after striking the ball has always been very important in my view.... Chester1970 (Armagh) - Posts: 509 - 24/04/2009 10:01:43 267086 Link 0 |
chatting to a free taker from yester year...he says that you should pass the ball over the bar...aim for something behind the nets.. its all technique lads, martin mc hugh a small man in stature could easily kick 50 metre... note 1992 cavan game to bring the game to a replay...Mc conville talks about routine, jonny wilkinson has a routine, charlie redmond had a routine... captain_morgan (Donegal) - Posts: 42 - 25/04/2009 00:52:16 267812 Link 0 |
I always found aiming for the post furthest away allowed for the ball to curl in, or maybe Im just a banana foot. Straight shots in front of the posts can be the hardest. cornerboy (Antrim) - Posts: 2 - 25/04/2009 10:29:25 267846 Link 0 |
