272906 sorry boxtyeater worded that ****ways, its a pity he missed out on them all the same.
He is an absolute gentleman also, great rolemodel for all leitrim gaels (and elsewhere for that matter)

Not a hobble Bob lad. Go to the magazine bar, GAA immortals and read about him. An absolute gem, we played together once or twice in the late '60s when he was taking it aisy!

Jinxie, very observant but it's actually Danny Murray who played on the Roscommon teams of the late 70's and 80's. He won All-Stars at no.7 in 1979 and '80. I know the late great Jimmy Murray that you mention. I once had the honour of shaking his hand in his pub in Knockcrochery when up there at a funeral. I went with players I have seen live or on TV, with the exception of Cavan (and that was to rise my in-laws up there more than anything else as they never let up about the great Cavan teams of the '40's and 50's) so with all due respect to any county where I passed, going back into the past doing research from old footage etc., isn't the same as watching the games happen while they were happening, be that at the pitch or on the screen. My judgement would probably be influenced by what I have heard others say about such players over the years so it was more appropriate to pass.

From what i've seen it would be: Football: Johnny Nevin...played from 1988-2005 i think...still playing senior club football at 41 while now a selector too on senior county team! A real legend. All those years battling away in div 4, with only a B championship & O'Byrne cup to show for it. Won a bit more with the hurlers but nowhere near enough for him. I bet despite being a true Carlowman, at times he must wish he was from Dublin/Meath or even L**** no i cant actually say that! Hurling: Well yet again Nevin has to have an honourable mention here...he played about 16 years with them too...many times lining out for hurlers & footballers on the same day! But the best hurler Carlow has is Shane Kavanagh our no 6. He is as good as you would get in any county. Plus the added bonus that he can strike over any free from half way or back towards his own 65 over the bar. I remember at an u-21 game a while back Carlow v Kilkenny and we were standing beside a KK fan...and he said that no 6 of yours would make our senior team already! Best compliment i heard to describe how good he is!

Shoulderghost, I'm surprised you haven't seen Barry Owens or Marty McGrath of Fermanagh in the flesh or at least on TV. You can amend that by watching the Ernesiders in the coming months.....

For Cavan it was probably "The Gallant John-Joe" O'Reilly, but before my time !!

During my time i think Dermot Mc Cabe was great. I believe he has just announced his retirement !!

Little mentioned, and maybe a little off the point of the topic, but John Gildea as Donegal's player of the 00's.

Barry McGowan was the best in my opinion incredibly strong and fit, great distributor of the ball and probably one of the most if not the most intelligent footballers i've ever seen.

Eiregocroi-no offense to ye Rebels, but was not Mr. Tompkins from Kildare. Even though he helped Cork to 2 Sams, is he not a lilywhite by birth? Try Jimmy Barry Murphy or Tom Creedon, home grown talent.

Historical - Tommy Murphy. Only Laoismann on GAA Team of the Millenium and all that.

That I saw play - Mick Lawlor. A real old school GAA fans man.

It always amazes me the amount of meath fans that place players ahead of giles in a survey like this and YES I know you are entitled to your opinion. There are a few lads there that have the sense to have him as their no 1. There is no doubt that Geraghty, Fay, O Rourke were great players but giles was at a different level altogether. A complete footballer, great vision, two feet, hard as nails and very accurate in the forwards. Played a lot of club and college stuff at centre back and was supposed to have been even better in that position. I would have him along side Moynahan as one of the truly great footballing brains of the last 15 yrs.(not inc managers). Martin OConnell is one I can see as a another good choice too as one of Meaths finest.
