Your county's top player of all time

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

My greatest county player at the moment is Alan Dillon.

My greatest county player of all time, as I am 28 y/o, id go for Kenneth Mortimor (2 ALL STARS). (If he marked Maurice Fitz instead of Pat Holmes in 1997, we would have won that All-Ireland.....fact)

Best County footballer of all time outside Mayo is Paul Curran of Dublin...(3 ALL STARS)

Purcell had huge respect for Jones, to the extent that he traveled up to Dungannon for Iggy's funeral. Before Canavan, Jones was acknowledged throughout Tyrone as our greatest ever footballer. The only other 2 who could be considered in the same debate as those 2 were Eugene McKenna and Frank McGuigan.

Thomas you will be getting Tyrone a bad name with posts like this. Absolutely spot on.

Perhaps I should have started a different thread but here is my 'top' footballer from each of the 34 counties … I also mention a few other greats in brackets where applicable as it's not possible not to do so. Those in brackets are in no order of preference. I've gone with players I've seen live, as much as I could. Names in bold indicate that I never saw the player play 'live' but just on TV or in one case just from old stories. I've passed on six occasions, where I just don't know enough about that county to offer an opinion. Remember these are just my personal opinions so I'm not going to answer any 'why' questions.

Antrim: Pass
Armagh: Paddy Moriarty (Joe Kernan, Paul McGrane, Francie Bellew)
Carlow: Tommy Dwyer (Johnny Nevin)
Cavan: John Joe Reilly (from what I hear no player since could ever come near him or even PJ. Duke or Simon Deignan)
Clare: Noel Roche (Francis McInerney, Seamus Clancy)
Cork: Declan Barron ( Niall Cahalane, Larry Tompkins, JB Murphy, Ray Cummins (only saw him in hurling)
Derry: Tony Scullion (Anthony Tohill, Brian Gilligan, Henry Downey)
Donegal: Brian McEniff (Seamus Bonner, Martin McHugh)
Down: Greg Blaney (Colm McAlarney, Sean O'Neill, Liam Austin, Mickey Linden)
Dublin: Brian Mullins (Anton O'Toole, Tommy Drumm, Jimmy Keaveney)
Fermanagh: Peter McGinnity (Martin McGrath, Barry Owens)
Galway: Tom Joe Gilmore (Thomas Mannion, Michael Donnellan, Padraig Joyce)
Kildare: John Crofton (Glenn Ryan, SOS Dowling, Tommy Carew)
Kilkenny: A big pass…
Kerry: Seamus Moynihan (even above the great Jacko', John Egan and Paudie Lynch)
Laois: Tom Prendergast (Bobby Millar, Colm Browne)
Leitrim: Mickey Quinn
Limerick: Donal Fitzgibbon (Paddy Barrett, John Quane)
London: Pass
Longford: Pass
Louth: Eugene Judge (Stefan White jnr., Seamus O'Hanlon)
Mayo: Martin Carney (Willie Joe Padden)
Meath: Gerry McEntee (Colm O'Rourke, Mick Lyons, Joe Cassells, Tommy Dowd, Martin O'Connell, Brendan Reilly)
Monaghan: Nudie Hughes (Ciaran Murray, Hugo Clerkin, Tommy Freeman, Ray McCarron)
New York: Pass
Offaly: Sean Lowry (Matt Connor, Martin Furlong, Johnny Mooney, Padraig Dunne)
Roscommon: Harry Keegan (Dermot Earley, Danny Murray)
Sligo: Eamon O'Hara (Barnes Murphy, Michael Kerins)
Tipperary: Declan Browne (Derry Foley, Barry Grogan)
Tyrone: Frank McGuigan (Peter Canavan, Conor Gormley, Eugene McKenna, Stephen O'Neill, Damien O'Hagan, Sean Cavanagh)
Waterford: Pass
Westmeath: Mike 'Spike' Fagan (John Keane, Dessie Dolan, Ger Heavin)
Wexford: Mattie Forde
Wicklow: Kevin O'Brien (Moses Coffey)

Fair due to you Shoulderghost. You've got some great players in there.

Seamus was great and I always change my mind about the greatest ever Kerry footballer. I dont think its possible to answer. The most entertaining to watch for me though was John Egan by a mile. And its nice to see you metioned him.

259072 One Rule: you only have one choice

Packie Mc Garty is my choice, one of the games greatest. Never won a Connaught championship, he played in 4 finals in a row, all lost to Galway. He played county senior football before he played minor and featured for leitrim in 4 decades. His lack of silverware tarnishes his brilliance, have a look for some match reports in games he played in for an idea of what he was like.

What's a few oul' medals worth when you can grow old with dignity and the respect and admiration of your peers, family and friends.
