A bad moon rising over Laois football

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Lads and ladies, a bad moon rises over Laois football. Under the third regime in a row, a Laois team with raw talent unforeseen in this little midland county is being brought to its knees by discontent. We have individual players most counties would kill for but once again, the attitude of some of our senior team has let us down & is being shown up by the underage structure which HAS entered the 21st Century of GAA, unlike it senior counterpart. I hear rumblings (not all of which may be true) about players deserting. No prizes for guessing some of them and others who have always been happy to train, play their hearts out and work hard see no hope and no point in waisting their spare time. These lads appear to be discontened at best, bailing out far more likely from what I hear. Wether or not these rumours are true, they are worrying as there is no smoke etc etc etc... Last weekend showed how talented players can behave when they are part of team with a virus. This virus is the typical lazy Laois shrug of the shoulders that I am personally quite sick of. There is an attitude in this county that when your doing badly, ya mayswell forget about making the effort so that ya dont look like a fool. This is eating away at our team at the moment. Sure, we didnt have to win on Sunday and Monaghan did, but the attitudes of our players was appalling &it was like they were trying to show the fans that such heavy defeat was cos they werent bothered. This isnt the mentality of men who go on to win great battles or die trying, its the mentality of little boys playing for their school team who dont want to look bad losing in front of their girlfriend on the sideline. Its no coincidence that Kevin Meaney and Ross Munnelly are great servants to our team, they werent mollycoddled from the age of 14. Some of these lads need to get a grip or never bother turning up to train after being honoured with selection for their county ever again. Theyre so far removed from the reality of being a great footballer, even being a man, that its making me sick. I would kill for their ability and it looks like they could do with a dose of a true fans ambition.

Here here Spud, you might have hit the nail on the head when you mention that the likes of Meaney hasn't been mollycoddled on the way up through the underage levels, giving him a greater sense of appreciation for the position he is now in, as opposed to the numerous players who have been playing county since the age of 14 and who have been hailed as the saviours of Laois football...Now the majority of these are fine footballers who most counties would die for, and maybe they just need to be brought back down to earth so that they fully appreciate playing for their county and give the jersey what it deserves...

another classy interlude from the biffos,

Yes as anybody will say Laois was once known as Queens County, if you have a problem you should refer your disdain to same British state that bestowed yourselves with the name Kings County.

If you have any problems, please come back and we'll gladly discuss it.

With Laois football looking dead and buried, it looks to get worse, just heard Under 21 star has been recruited back to his childhood team Athy by one of his previous managers who he was very close to. This would also mean playing for Kildare once again I have heard! Any truth in these rumours..?

Doubt it. Why would he want to play for a team knocked out of Leinster by Wicklow last year? Wicklow.....

JohnCummins, can I ask where you heard that rumour, cos you'd be well advised to steer clear of whoever said it to you!

Right lad, away with you there, i did not see you posting here when we were going well. We will be back up again. You might want to look on your own doorstep. Try to use the boards for a laugh and stop posting tripe.

dont know how i wondered in here but im glad i did!
spud, good post actually. a lot of it rings true in offaly too.we had a disscussion last dec or jan on our board,(with good posters,we aren all like them lads),about dedication to make the county panel.im just speaking for offaly now- The footballers who are on county panels,by and large are dedicated/have been dedicated to the cause for a long time?
its not particularly fair for men like you or me to have a go at them.it has to be remembered that to play county football you have to be extremly fit and fast.straight away beer and going out is cut from your agenda.imagine it like this, wake up at 8 to go to work.you eat a breakfast that would have been used in oliver twist and a lunch that tastes like dry wall.your home from work and if your lucky you get a bit of dinner before your off at 6/half 6 to get to training because you need a rub.you do a good hour and a half of training before you get home and drop into bed.Repeat, only this day you have weights training. you cant go to cinema or nightclub on a weekend because you have a team bonding session in mayo or cork.
being a county player leave's no room for real enjoyment in life and i personnaly think some lads who do it are great. there is a player from my club who is called into offaly training every year but declines because he doesn have the interest in doing what i just said.

now spud and co. im not having a go,id just like to have a proper discussion on this. is county football only for teachers and students? would you rather have 15 talented lads or 15 workaholics?
