At least Ballela turn up unlike another team I could mention!!

We've the club Ballygalget brigade down in McKenna this Sunday. Those two points in the bag will stave off any relegation worries for us.

Will there ever be a revamp of this league? Some problems need addressed big time for next year, and i believe that one division between all clubs would solve this. Here's why:

At the minute there are 13 clubs hurling in Down and while a league table with 13 teams may seem hefty fixture-wise, most of the ACFL tables have around 10 teams. A few extra games midweek, or a slight extension of the league running further into August so that all teams can play each other twice would be more favourable, leaving the very short Championships into September. The overall more game time for all clubs would improve hurling in Down altogether. The Ards teams (3rds) that compete in Division 2 could fold, but it would be in their favour leaving 30 players in each club to grind between both Antrim and Down leagues. The competition could only improve between the clubs making it a more interesting and battling league. There have been hints of improvement in the 'mainland' clubs: Liatroim and Kilclief have been plugging away at the Ards in Div 1, while Clonduff have come on leaps and bounds in Div 2, as well as steadily improving Castlewellan beating Ballycran a while back, as well as Liatroim (by 12 points) in a challenge match on Monday night, and Ballyvarley and Carryduff getting results from the Pennisula too. The referees would not be stretched by having to do two matches in one night!

Any points for/against would like to be heard!!

ballycran result was due to men who hadnt hurled at a decent level in near half a decade stripping out. a complete gatherup. 3rds squad down there is wafer thin, with most of the named 3rds now making up most of the 2nds panel. ballycran decimated by guys moving for work and the old dogs hanging up their boots and throwing away their hurls........ one of the worst panels ever i have heard.... if the 2nds is on the same night , ballycran will struggle to beat anyone at junior level. next year a few minors will have to step up to the plate.

Ards hurling and down hurling in general is gonna suffer due to this , not a huge catchment area ( in most clubs bar cduff and bredagh) and the clubs youth is moving away.....theres really gonna be the possibility of down struggling to reach an ulster final in a few years if the trend doesnt stop ............ the shock armagh result may become the norm.

If the Ards clubs cut their 3rds teams you would have loads of fellows not getting a game how would that help

Won't work Barrack buster, we're already putting 30 odd points on teams in Div1, what'd we be doing to teams in an all inclusive division featuring teams from div2.

Change to top 18/20 genuine excluded for Ards - they have Antrim league and reserve then throw the rest of county all in to one 'division one'. The teams that want to progress over here will stand a better chance of improving. Give it a couple o years and review. I here Ballela and Shamrocks are struggling for numbers at the moment hence the 30 points job.

So you are in effect trying to weaken the standard of club hurling to where the Ards clubs are fielding thirds strings against the likes of Liatroim and Newry just so they can win the odd game!

And you wonder why the likes of Bredagh are following the Ards clubs into Antrim for proper competition!!

Everyone who wants to play hurling should be facilitated, not be penalised for improving.

for the record both ourselves and Balygalget put two teams out on the monday night, the ports will do almost anything but.

How will handicaping the Ards clubs improve hurling in the rest of Down surely it will have the opposite effect

What would Always right be like if he'd travelled all the way over to the Ards, no ref turns up and the home club refuses to toss for it, forcing the travelling club to trapse all the way home again?

Well if you want to promote hurling then you should be prepared to play any game any time.
