To patrique and dhorse re Nemo Rangers. Well done dhorse you are quite correct and have gone away up in my estimation. The name Nemo meaning nobodies was given to a group of students from the North Mon School who wished to play the National Game and were ostracised by their Rugby playing fellow students, this was in 1910 and some 5 years later a group of students from the other side of the City around Turners Cross adopted the name when they formed a Club. There had been a Club in the area called Rangers since 1893 and in the early 1920's both Rangers and Nemo amalgamated and have played as Nemo Rangers since then. corkcelt (Cork) - Posts: 4388 - 10/04/2009 14:59:39 254203 Link 0 |
patrique County: Antrim Posts: 2849 252641 BIG SACKS County: Tyrone Posts: 372 251709 Ballymun are not the only Kickhams Arent Creggan also Kickhams? Patrique will know. Yes they are, and Ardoyne. But why is this funny? Named after Charles Kickham. Being named after the starship enterprise like Nemo or something is a bit more unusual. Personally I always thought "The Queen's Gaelic Club" was a bit of a strange name when you think about it. Not that strange Patrique. Came across an old letter Eamonn Phoenix sent into the Irish News a few years back. "Among the leading unionists in the early Gaelic revival in Ulster were Sir William MacArthur, founder of the QUB Gaelic Society in 1906 and later director of medical services in the British army - he was knighted in 1937." Most of the prominent Gaels in the early 1900s in Ulster were Unionists. I would add Lisburn Red Hands to the list. Probably won't make much sense to anyone outside of Antrim though, but that's a very strange name for a hurling club. Benandonner (Antrim) - Posts: 459 - 10/04/2009 15:19:17 254213 Link 0 |
