Clubs with unusual names

Very interesting read Chester, and I for one could not hope to match that.

In that GAA wilderness of Belfast former all Ireland camogie club finalists are called "Deirdre". Now who was she? Her of the sorrows or what?

Cushendall are called "Ruairi Og". Who was he?

And Ballycastle are simply named after local chieftains (or the local butcher) "McQuillians"

I'm not sure about the rest of the country but in Cork slang, a slash meant something specific, something that you train kids to do in their potties. Hence since my youngest days listening to Sean Og O'Ceallachain reading the GAA results on a Sunday night I used to roar with laughter everytime I heard him mention the Longford Slashers. I was a young kid then now I'm a grandfather and very mature and serious and Ha HA HA , Hee Hee Hee, Ho HO Ho oh i'm sorry ehm where's the delete button.

I always thought the clubs in Antrim had great names. Oisin's , Tir na nOg , Shane O'Neill's, Cuchullian's. All names with a real history to them, that's before you get into all the old Republicans.

I was trying to explain this to an English friend once. I told him the story about Oisin and the horse, about how these mythological figures could meet on the hurling field thousands of years down the line.

Probably shouldn't have ended by going "Chelsea, that's a **** name." though...

Being named after the starship enterprise like Nemo or something is a bit more unusual.

Think Nemo is something linked to North Mon school,,,,, come in Corkcelt
