Ice Baths debate

clash of the ash.....

i doubt those pictures in the link you provided are as a result of ice baths. unless you fell asleep in one of them for a few hours and even then it would be hard to get frostbite from an icebath. people that do expeditions to the north pole get that sort of frostbite..not footballers that get into an icebath for 30 seconds at a time.

red rum have you any evidence to support your theory that ice baths flush out lactic acid as there is no documented medical litterature to support that view. or is it something that you heard.

well reddoctor what i do know is that it is scientific fact that increased heart rate (which the ice bath will induce) will deliver oxygen to the muscles at a faster rate. Thus, Once sufficient oxygen is restored, the lactic acid can be utilized for energy or reconverted into glucose by the liver and other tissues (oxidation). This will eventually help bring us full circle to muscle recovery. although this does not directly prove the effectiveness of ice baths, it is strong support,

No doubt you disagree?

your eulogising my man red rum or is that red dum if you can show me that an ice bath can increase heart rate to a level where oxygen can be utilised more efficiently i will be astounded. how would this be measured. also what would be the optimum temperature of the ice for this astounding miracle. for your theory to be correct the muscles that ice baths are designed to help the legs wouuld need to be actually exercising to increase blood flow to them. but quote the paper or journal or more likely the library book you have taken this info from, and i will be happy to reassess.

the great sean boylan regularly brought meath teams for a dip in the Irish sea at Clogherhead in the depths of winter. Same effect as an ice bath!
