Right. You need structure then, depending on the size of the project.
So take football. The "experts" say the the three games between Kerry and Kildare in the 1903 series, actually played in 1905, "made" football, so you look up the home towns of a few of those players and take a few photos.
Wexford's four in a row team from 1914-17 sends you to Wexford for the same.
The photos from Kerry and Kildare now come in handy for the 1920s as their rivalry dominated that era, and you have photos of Larry Stanley's home/grave or whatever.
1930s Mayo is worth a visit, and Roscommon for the 1940s. The rise of Ulster football, in the province at least in the 1950s is worth looking at. Onl;y Cavan, Armagh, Antrim and Monaghan had won Ulster before 1956. The fact that the rise is probably down to the 1944 education act however isn't a great help, unless you want to include a photo of Foster. After that act Catholic lads increasingly went to grammar school and university, and competed nationally at Hogan and Sigerson level. That was the biggest factor in developing Derry, Tyrone, Down and reviving Armagh.
For the 1960s Down is a must and I attended a reception last week in Warrenpoint with Barney Carr, the wife's uncle, who trained the Down 1960/61 team, the first team to bring Sam over the border. He was the "Mickey Harte" of his era, although in those days no-one actually heard of them. A photo of Barney would go down well, or Paddy Docherty, Sean O'Neill or James Mccartan, who made up possibly the best half forward line in the games history.
Obviously in "modern" times, the Dubs and Kerry from the 1970s, arguably the two best sides ever, and right up to present with the emergence of Armagh and Tyrone in the present decade.
If you are doing a lengthy thesis building it like that could help.
I can suggest a hurling "blueprint" if you need one, but I don't actually know what the project entails.

Hi cheers for all the help, I haven't been able to log on for a few days because of internet difficulties so thanks for the info. I'm actually on my way to down at the moment to Glassdrumman, they are involved with the Celebrity Bainisteoir series this year. But I'll try to get in contact with those people you suggested.
Patrique you mentioned you aren't sure what exactly the project entails, its basically a very long photoessay approx 100 photos that I have to take myself on the GAA. So current teams and greats and grounds as well as past greats etc. So any more ideas are most welcome. Thanks
