Hi I'm doing a photojournalism thesis on 125 years of GAA and I'm looking for a bit of help. I want to capture as many aspects of the GAA as possible. I got to take photos at the club finals last week as well as the dublin parade. Obviously I want to get photos of club life, how would I go about contacting clubs? And which clubs should I include? Would anyone know how to get in contact with any GAA historians? I'm also looking to photograph GAA buildings and places. What ones would you recommend? Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated Cheers UibhFhailiGal1 (Offaly) - Posts: 7 - 24/03/2009 09:21:16 237823 Link 0 |

if you mean stretch it out as in spend as long doing the thesis and delay trying to find a job well no choice I'm afraid deadline is April 30th. And Ok so I'm slightly clueless as to "patrique" but any other ideas of people or places I could photograph. Clubs training, particularly scenic/historic GAA grounds and all that? many things you could try, first would be to contact the clubs directly, all there secratarys details are on each countys page, you will find them on gaa.ie, also you should contact the clubs in the uk and trhe states they have loads of stuff and would be very willing to help, it should add an extra dimention to you thesis too. i would recommend getting in touch with croke park too as there really looking at the moment for ideas and marketing stratagys to promote the 125 celebrations so there could be a conversation to be had there, also the will sometimes allow extrat photography in and around corker so worth a shot. rich dublin (None) - Posts: 425 - 24/03/2009 16:07:21 238267 Link 0 |
Maybe try the club PRO's or secretaries. The Golden Pages should have contact nos. Club champs Portumna for example might be able to put you in touch with historians like John Joe Conwell, he of Hearts of Oak fame :) Maroonatic (Galway) - Posts: 1071 - 24/03/2009 16:30:09 238301 Link 0 |

For scenic grounds get to Newcastle County Down before it becomes a new Tesco. And Killarney, the ground in the Cooley mountains, Sligo with majestic Ben Bulben in the background, and a few others to be found. patrique (Antrim) - Posts: 13709 - 24/03/2009 23:42:33 238843 Link 0 |
I would suggest you get a glimpse of hurling in the Glens of Antrim, particularly around Cushendall & Glenariff. How they have managed to keep a thriving hurling scene going in a small pocket of Co. Antrim would require a thesis itself. It's also one of the most scenic and beautiful parts of Ireland. On a more darker point I would also suggest you contact Ardoyne GAA club in North Belfast who have had many members murdered during the Troubles and the detrimental effect it had on the GAA in North Belfast. If you are going to be truthful to all aspects of the GAA this would have to be included. St. Enda's in North Belfast (Glengormley) and Bellaghy GAC in South Derry would have similar stories but the Ardoyne club suffered dreadfully. Hi folks thanks so much for all your replies, I've only been able to access the site now for some unknown reason it wouldn't allow me to log on for the past 24 hours. Thanks for the ideas for scenic grounds they should make great photos. I have to take all of the photos myself so basically its a photo-essay. But I'll try and check out all of your suggestions.
