With all this talk about the Intermediate football I thought I'd start a thread to discuss the Senior Championship. Who does everyone think will be contesting the final in December or whenever the County Board get around to playing it this year?! The bookies have Kilanerin favourites to retain their title, followed by Gusserane, Shels & Clongeen I think.

Also what does everyone think about the early start for the championships this year, personally I'm unhappy about it, I think it's too early. As a consequence I think it could mean League form is more important this year than previous years. One round of League games have been played already, with another one this weekend, who's looking good?

Horeswood have a good chance themselves versus kilanearan last year was the best game of the club championships and horswood probably should have won the game.

It's impossible to tell from current League form. For example - the Shels played Clongeen and beat them by four points last weekend but both sides were missing a good few players due to the game against Meath in the NFL.

I reckon Clongeen will go well based on the fact that they've a tough group in the League and a difficult enough draw in the Championship - all dog fights they should come out of and that would stand to them later in the year.

Shels also look like a nice bet and have more young players coming through again next year - they will have learned a lot from their struggle to get out of Intermediate and from a promising first campaign last year.

this is a year for the underdog, clongeen and horeswood are past it and kilanerin are on the way down, ballyhogue or fethard possibly could produce a few shocks this year but my money is on shels, pipped by a lucky gusserane team last year and will be difficult to stop this year, annes to struggle also, taghmon to go down!!

spiderbarron, on what do you base your assertion that kilanerin are on the way down. they are reigning league and championship holders, with a number of players who have just won their first senior championship medal. Kilanerinfootie outlined on another thread that there is serious competition for places on both the senior and intermediate teams. it will however be a huge struggle as it has been since the early 90's to retain the title this year, with the very competitive nature of the SFC in wexford. I also fancy shels to go well but their lack of a free scoring forward may well be their undoing. I wouldn't write off any of clongeen, horsewood or gusserane either. Castletown also have the ability, it's just a matter of them putting a consistent run together and keeping guys focused. All in all the makings of another competitive championship in my opinion.

Some interesting posts there. Wouldn't agree with spiderbarron that Kilanerin are on the way down, they just won the Senior Championship with a good mixture of experienced campaigners & talented younger lads. Also I wouldn't agree that Gusserane were lucky to beat Shels last year, but I do think that Horeswood are on the way down though, have heard they have lost a few players to emigration as well. I reckon the bookies have it about right, & the winner will come from Kilanerin, Shels, Gusserane or Clongeen. Don't know about Taghmon for relegation, I think they might be good enough to stay up. Who could have predicted Glynn & Bunclody to go down in the last few years? Should be a cracking Championship!

I think the bookies have it about right. Our boys had their first training session on Wednesday night so maybe the early start will do them no good. Horeswood are still to be feared though, they were without Darren O Reilly and I cant remember whwther Leigh O Brien was back from injury or was still out against Kilanerin last year. Either way they damn near won that game.

I think Taghmon will stay up and their young team will grow into the senior grade, the sarsfields may be in danger though.

Kilanerin have 4 points from 2 games in the league so far, beating adamstown and gusserane ( unconvincingly though in both cases considering we only have 1 with the co. team while they were both worse hit). How are all the other clubs doing or has anybody spotted any evidence to suggest that the bookies have it wrong after 2 rounds?

Gusserane are not near favourites (dont know why) but have to be backed each way at 12/1 if they come outa group of death they will be very hard to beat. Shels, clongeen, horeswood have a good chance too.

dont thin horsewood will be up to much this year, taghmon have a hard group and it may be a case of men against boys

I reckon Taghmon could be in senior for a few years to be honest, there one of the best organised clubs in the country and they were putting in the work for the last few years at underage and so on so they deserve it and I wish them well

some interesting posts here alright nocky. one thing im 100% sure of is d winner wil come from kilanerin gusserane clongeen and horeswood.the only surprise fethard will spring is to stay up. i cant understand either why everybody is tipping shels, they came out of a group last year with duffry starlights and sarsfiels, three woeful teams. they scraped over an average adamstown team and only for the conditions and a couple of lucky goals would have been hammered by gusserane. their a well organised outfit but simply dont have the firepower to compete with the big four

I would like to back shels to progress on from last year. I was playing that day against them in the rain in the semi final stages of last years championship, and would not put them down to be a flash in the pan. they were excellent and we only narrowly beat them, they lack scoring forwards but their midfield and centre back were class... id predict horeswood and gusserane to get of group and i think its anyones to win this year.

Alright lads & lassies, the Senior Football Championship kicks off this weekend, let's have a bit of fun and predict the outcomes of the 8 matches up for decision. No prizes for getting the most correct results, just the respect of your Hoganstand peers. Here's my attempt:

Shelmaliers vs. St. Annes...........Shels
Duffry Rovers vs. Fethard...........Fethard
Bannow vs. St. Martins...............Bannow
Kilanerin vs. Starlights...............Kilanerin
Ballyhogue vs. Sarsfields...........Ballyhogue
Clongeen vs. Adamstown...........Clongeen
Gusserane vs. Horeswood..........Draw
Castletown vs. Taghmon............Castletown

A lot of very tough games to call there, I'll be delighted if I get more than 3 correct and don't embarrass myself too much!
