Donegal_insider- I was there that year and yes Clones was in bad state after heavy down pours, I think after that that the hill was renovated as I remember alot of people slipping on the (Grass) mud slope! one person come to mind! a Donegal gentleman in a white suit and straw hat ,met him in the Crighton after the match andI bought him a drink. Both matchs should have never taking place. was the young Derry lad called Diamond?

Having not won anything from the 1950s Mayo should think about playing PUKE football if that gets results!

Just a comment for the people that are saying Derry would have won another All-Ireland if there had've been a back door.
Derry only won the All-Ireland in 93 because the Ulster final, against the All-Ireland champions, was played in monsoon conditions in Clones. A minor broke his leg in the game beforehand, but still the match went ahead. The year before, Donegal played 14 men against Derry for all the second half and some of the first half, and still won. So if I was yous, i'd just be happy with 1993 and say no more.

I'm pretty sure they also beat Dublin and Cork in order to win Sam as well, unless they presented Sam in Clones that day?

Yes Niamh they did. But if (ah that magical word) that game had been played in any reasonable conditions, then it's unlikely Derry would have won.
It's only my opinion but the year before a 14 man Donegal beat Derry in the Ulster Final.

Donegal Insider, in 2005 Tyrone won Sam, in 2006 Derry kept them scoreless for 38 minutes. Your argument means nothing. It's like saying the only reason Down won Sam in 1994 is because they beat Derry in the first round.

232416 Derry early 90's if they had the back door they would be as sucess ful as Tyrone this decade.

Niamh, I think you have contradicted yourself slightly here, with your subsequent arguments.

There is no guarantee that Derry would have won any more all-Irelands, although I rated that team very highly. If you look at Tyrone's record even in Ulster, during this decade they have already won three Ulster titles and I still feel should have been four but for a couple of very controversial incidents in 2005. Derry managed two Ulsters in the entire life-span of their team. To be fair they had a great NFL record but very few people use that to judge the greatness of a team. If there had been a back-door system maybe Derry would not have any All-Irelands. Great teams adapt to the competition they are in and come out on top.

Is that when they spent loads of money to make it into a decent pitch, instead of doing the obvious and renovating Casement? Now I never really liked water polo but that 1993 game was one of the better ones.

All of the South were terrified of Derry in the 1990s, because I don't think they lost to any southern teams. In 91 they lost in a replay to the winners Down, in 92 they lost to the winners Donegal, and in 94 lost to Down by a point I think. In 95 and 96 they lost to Tyrone, and in 96 Tyrone were a cut above anything else. In 97 they contrived to lose to Cavan.

In all of those years I think they might have won at least one more title with a second chance.

But we will never know. Same as we will never know if Tyrone might have won all those Ulster titles if there had been no back door. Put it this way, I don't think Cork would have won three Munster's this decade without a back door.

I hate this childish My Dads bigger than your dad,my team better than your team, FACT is lads history books will "SAY" WHO WON THE ALL-IRELAND'S AND NOT THAT THE FOOTBALL WAS NOT UP TO PAT SPILLANES STRANDED OR THOSE WHO DISAGREE THAT THE BACK DOOR SYSTEM IS RIGHT.
