(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

In the last 20 years 5 different Ulster counties have won Sam Maguire. Which of these sides where the best??? Would be most interested to hear the views of our unbiased southern friends!!

After something like 10 championship games Armagh and Tyrone are separated by one point, in Tyrone's favoiur. Derry should have won a lot more, probably would have with a back door, and Down had some serious forwards. Donegal were a useful outfit as well.

I will sit on the fence on this one.

I do know Antrim have continued to have the best hurling team in this time, although if McGilligan, McGurk, the Downey's and McKeever hadn't concentrated on football, that could have been different.

Derry early 90's if they had the back door they would be as sucess ful as Tyrone this decade.

I'd have to give the nod to Tyrone for beating great Kerry teams in 2 epic All-Ireland finals. I was also very impressed by Derry in '93, a team that I feel never got the recognition it deserved. They had some superb players like Anthony Tohill (the best all-round footballer bar none in the early to mid nineties), Enda Gormley and Henry Downey. They definitely would have won more if the back-door system had been in place then - in '94 they narrowly lost to Down in one of the best games of the decade and Down went on to win the all-Ireland. Anyway, as a Galwayman who grew up watching Connacht and Ulster teams getting slaughtered on a regular basis in all-Ireland semi-finals during the eighties, I am delighted to see the change in fortunes of both provinces since 1991.

tough choice but tyrone r top of da pile as all-irelands are the barometer, Armagh a close second, dominant in ulster for last ten years

Derry Have had they chance in the back Door too Niamh but were not good enough, you have won it once as Ulster Champions the same as Tyrone its just Tyrone know the way now ,we got the Key to the Kingdom and have never looked back.

Good post Gaillimh-Abu. Tough call here lads, but the nod goes to Armagh from me.
Following Patrique's "logic" there's not much between Armagh and Tyrone but personally I feel that Tyrone were better equipped with real quality individuals who were able to inspire their colleagues ( Canavan, Cavanagh and O'Neill ) wheras' Armagh were more of a committed group of 15/20 all with great ability.
That said, McGeeneys, McConvilles, Marsdens and McEntees don't grow on trees but they were a better all round team in my mind.

Just a comment for the people that are saying Derry would have won another All-Ireland if there had've been a back door.
Derry only won the All-Ireland in 93 because the Ulster final, against the All-Ireland champions, was played in monsoon conditions in Clones. A minor broke his leg in the game beforehand, but still the match went ahead. The year before, Donegal played 14 men against Derry for all the second half and some of the first half, and still won. So if I was yous, i'd just be happy with 1993 and say no more.
Overall, It's hard to look past Armagh. I think from about 1999 until 2004 they were beaten by the eventual All Ireland champs, except 2002 when they won the All Ireland, but i'm open to correction on this.
