My post was aimed at keep_the_faith

Darren Fays so called lack of quality won him two all ireland medals..Francie cant say that

he obviously thinks that winning titles shows how quality a player is. Francie cant say he won 2 All Ireland because he has won 5.

Walkman . i think anyone is entitled to call Francie Bellew an over rated footballer , If like me they were of the opinion that he dident actually play football.

Bellow is my favourite non-Meath player about the moment - really hope he doesn't retire.

I seen him play for Armagh on several occasions and also watched him for Cross manys a time. An absolute fantastic full back - and a fella that doesnt need to goade / mouth or grab anybody in the ****** to get one over on opponents.. Genuine hard man.

Anyways - I'm a big fan of his..

In relation to him versus Fay.
Firstly - its a riduclous trying to use medals as a basis for comparison.
Darren is a Trim who have only won the Keegan Cup on one occassion in their history (back in the 60s) - while Francie is a member of one of the most succesful clubs of all time.

Secondly - Id have Darren at No.3 every time over Francie as he is the best of a generation. In his day (right to up to 2005) Bellew, Canty or Owens would not even be close to him. Even past his best - he put a man of the match performance against Tyrone in 07 - I'm sure the Tyrone lads will back me up on that..

But this post is about Bellew - not Fay and like I said - it would be good to see him dishing out a few belts again...

If you are going to call someone an over rated player then back it up with evidence. The fact that he was beaten by Donaghy is not really evidence, it is one game in 7 years. On the other hand he has had a short county carreer.
And if he didnt play football then what did he play? He has only seen red twice in his carreer and one of them was resinded.

francie is a quality footballer. people on this site slate him off because donaghy caught one ball and stuck it in the net. people forget he had donaghy in his pocket for the majority of the match, so one mistake doesnt make him a bad footballer. he's an honest player with no heirs or graces

Have a look at this descrption of what Francie has won
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Bellew.

And then of course there is his own dedicated website...

http://www.freewebs.com/franciebellew/

Worth a look....quite amusing

In response to walkman, reeming off the titles he has won is fair enough but it still does not mean hes a class player. I recognise the fact that what he has won many titles but he didnt win them single handlely did he? look at the players that he played with?! he wasnt the main cornerstone as much as he was made out to be. my opinion is that he is an average enough player. he has been shown up many times. There has been games where he looks uncomforable and out of position. Winning plenty of titles doesnt make him a better player than the likes of Darren Fay.That is bull. Bellew lacks the finesse to be top class eg.lack of pace....he may have been effective enough with his time with Armagh but im still not a fan.I recognise ye ok maybe he is a good player but all im saying is that hes not the finished article by a long shot.any opinions lads?

Put simply WALKMAN, when a footballer (usually a back) has to resort to pulling, graging ect, it's usually an admission that he can't handle his opponent's football ability. So he resorts to what he does best and 9 times out of 10 this will be outside the rules. I'm sorry walkman, this just happened too often in BELLEWS career for me to rate him anywhere near the top as a quality FOOTBALLER. I actually think he would be getting out at a very good time now that the GAA are starting to implement the rules.

Dandy,

When I read your post I was thinking to myself, fair enough Francie isnt the fastest of full backs but then you said Armagh but im still not a fan but then you go and say.... he may have been effective enough with his time with Armagh but im still not a fan - now when you said that the first thing that comes to mind was that you dont like Bellew. Bellew was in no way fast but he still managed to stop players getting past him. Like I said in a previous post, Bellew wasnt around nowhere near as long as the other Armagh players. He started his county carreer in 2002 against Louth. If he was given the chance earlier on who knows how good he would have been?

As for the titles - Some other poster brought that up. I was merely pointing out that Bellew has more titles, yes he did have a very good team around him but he didnt get into the Crossmaglen team because he was rubbish now did he?

Francie is a great player and a credit to his club and county. As he rides out into the sunset and looks back he will see a trail of dejected and broken forwards strewn behind him !! Well done Francie .. a legend !!

After today Francie and many of the Cross side should call it a day. They have nothing more to prove and just looked like a punch drunk boxer against Kilmacud having had one fight too many. It is also time for the other Ulster club sides to now step up to the mark. Cross are living on their reputation now, they have been average indeed poor for a year or two. That was proven against St. Vincents last year and Crokes today.

Was a great player. Saw him today and although still has great timing and heart I think it is time to call it a day at county level.

Today was not a good sign for Armagh in my opinion. Lots of their county panel are on that rangers team and ......... well....I thought they would have been more competitive.

Francie was a great player. People can argue otherwise, but that is your opinion.

He will be forever remembered by Armagh fans and by any forwards that has had the pleasure of playing against him. Donaghy has even said that Francie was a gentleman when he played against him in 06.

Cavan Slasher A slight variation, as francie rides out into the sunset he will be forever remembered as one of the last of his kind ever to play at county level. Thanks to the new generation of backs that can play FOOTBALL, you see francie could figure near the top of a lot of lists, just not the FOOTBALL ones. Oh That's just my opinion of course. I've now posted 3 posts on this subject and that's 2 more than i normally do, because I've found that it doesn't matter how many posts you make on a subject, the facts remain the same.
