MacRory Cup final

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Second time writing this as my internet cut on me half way through the last one. I was up at the McRory Cup Semi Final between Omagh CBS and St Marys Belfast. For those of you who dont know, the McRory Cup is Ulster Colleges A Football tournament. It was a great game of football which Omagh sneaked in the end up to set up a final tie with Tyrone rivals St Pats Dungannon. I was secretly hoping for a St Marys win, purely for the good it could have done for football in Belfast. Some great performances by both teams. On the way home, discussion between my fellow travellers centred around the dominance of Tyrone colleges in the McRory Cup in this past decade. Both Omagh CBS and the Academy in Dungannon have had great teams in the competition and both schools have went on to taste further success in the Hogan cup as well. There are a huge number of past pupils hailing from these two schools who make up the bulk of the current Tyrone senior squad (the likes of the Mc Mahon brothers, Dermot Carlin, Raymond Mulgrew, Damien Mc Caul, Stevy O'Neill, Brian Mc Guigan etc), and it is a huge well done to all those involved at schools level in Tyrone. Long may the good work continue and hopefully this will add further to our senior titles. Just so that i cannot be accussed of posting another Tyrone thread and blowing as usual, here's the cold hard facts of the winner of the McRory Cup: 2000 St Pats Armagh 2001 Omagh CBS 2002 Omagh CBS/ St Michaels Enniskillen shared 2003 St Pats Maghera 2004 St Pats Academy Dungannon 2005 Omagh CBS 2006 Abbey CBS Newry 2007 Omagh CBS 2008 St Pats Academy Dungannon 2009 Omagh CBS/St Pats Academy Dungannon P.S. We could nearly claim 2000 as well saying as the great Sean Cavanangh and other Tyrone youngsters were involved with this Armagh team ;)

Plenty of Armagh men involved with last few St Pats Dungannon teams. 3 or 4 on each i think. No doubt it is good going all the same.

Good stats Rio. But public perception is that the kings of the McRory are Pats Armagh. Fact!

Can anyone confirm what the rules are for eligibility for the McRory? The excuse for so little Cavan success is always that the northern schools McRory teams are a year older, but I'm not sure its as straightforward as that. Anyone clarify?

Breffni - in the 1980s, College Senior Football was classed as 'under-18 and a half' (giving six county colleges an advantgae) then it was reduced to under 18 around 1990. I don't know if it is still the same, but when I was in my last year of school in Belfast a good few lads couldn't play McLarnon Cup football as they were overage.

I think it's U19 for the MacRory Cup but i remember hearing that some players from an Ulster school that played in the MacRory final couldn't play in the Hogan Cup Semis or Final because they were overage for it as it was U18 and a half. Not sure if this is true or if it was BS...

I do indeed Rio, if you see a couple of wee lads running around Roan in Armagh jerseys they are the nephews myself and my brother have brainwashed. Still working on a couple of them.
