Lads, I have to disagree with some of your posts re the game. Declan Prendergast clearly struck Eddie Brennan off the ball with his hurley on the head. That was a disgusting act no matter what way you look at it and should not be referred to as handbags. He could have seriously put his life in danger and will almost certainly get 3 months for striking with a hurley. The ref did great and had no other choice but to produce the yellow cards when he did as he only applying the rules as he is told. Eddie Brennan will almost definately get his red card rescended on appeal with video evidence. Jackie Tyrell and one other waterford player clearly struck each other in the face with their fists which is also an automatic straight red and a 4 week suspension but the ref gave them a yellow i think. They were also very lucky.Lets be honest here some of that stuff was not handbags, good game tho and thoroughly enjoyed it. stranded (UK) - Posts: 408 - 02/03/2009 12:06:09 221904 Link 0 |
Great game. Thought Owen Kelly made a meal outa the challenge on him. The guy appeared only to have grazed his arm on way past. I got the impression he was spoilin for a fight from the off. I thought that the pull with the hurl on Eddie was minor enough . I think Eddie went down a wee bit easy. I`d have preferred to have seen him clobber him back. He may as well have as they both got their marchin orders. My overview was that it was pure handbags. Enjoyed the game. gaelantrim (Antrim) - Posts: 1616 - 02/03/2009 12:14:13 221913 Link 0 |
According to Davy Fitz, "Declan must have been frustrated for some reason." !! hurlingdub (Dublin) - Posts: 6978 - 02/03/2009 12:48:21 221957 Link 0 |
Looked at it again this morning on telly and it did not look good at all. Every day that this Cork dispute goes on i'm becoming increasingly frustrated and feel like pulling on a lot of people, but frustration or not you just can't do that.. corkcelt (Cork) - Posts: 4388 - 02/03/2009 12:58:13 221970 Link 0 |
Nothing wrong with good hard hurling like that. Declan Prendergast deserved to go. As for the yellows, i think they were all warranted. Maybe Eddie Brennan was harshly sent off but overall great viewing for the 1st of March. Kilanerinfooty (Wexford) - Posts: 200 - 02/03/2009 13:01:20 221972 Link 0 |

I was at the game very unfair to have it labeled a disgracefull game, for march they were some mighty hurling in it , The ref was far to fickle and upset things a wee bit. shrewdjudge (Waterford) - Posts: 290 - 02/03/2009 14:11:48 222040 Link 0 |
hurlingdub...you really are being a bit hypocritical here..so its ok for a few hurlers to knock lumps out of each other but us northern boys indulge in a few"handbags" as you call it..and it's time to throw the book at us...mmmm mayotyroneman (Tyrone) - Posts: 1821 - 02/03/2009 14:17:27 222048 Link 0 |
Eastgael how much was it to go into the Gaelic Grounds yesterday? Wenger (Limerick) - Posts: 2 - 02/03/2009 14:23:35 222057 Link 0 |
shrewdjudge Only saw game on telly but I would agree with what you are saying. It was a fine game and great entertainment., I thoroughly enjoyed it and was delighted to see Waterford win. Not so much an anti Kilkenny thing but I think Waterford needed to restore pride after last year's All Ireland, and they did it in spades yesterday. The real hurling doesn't start for a while yet but Waterford have set down a marker. Tipp are moving along nicely as well, I think it will be between The Cats and the two of ye. Declan Prendergasts pull was out of character, but it can't be condoned, I'm afraid he is looking at a few weeks on the sideline. corkcelt (Cork) - Posts: 4388 - 02/03/2009 14:27:36 222063 Link 0 |
Mayotyroneman, I never said it was okay to knock lumps out of anyone nor did I use the word 'handbags.' Nor incidentially have I ever called for anyone to be suspended including Mr. McMenamin. I would have no hesitation at all in suspending Prendergast for two months. Have seen the effects of similar assaults with hurleys and they cannot be condoned under any circumstances. hurlingdub (Dublin) - Posts: 6978 - 02/03/2009 14:40:32 222082 Link 0 |

Eddie Brennan is no saint either lads, and if I remember correctly he caught Seamus Hickey with a stray hurley in the side of the head in the first few minutes of the 07 All-Ireland. He could have gotten the line in that match in the first 15 mins alone. I dont reckon Pender meant to catch him in the head, but he sdid and will get 8 weeks as a result, no excuses. icehonesty (Wexford) - Posts: 2574 - 03/03/2009 10:05:12 222671 Link 0 |
i think it was his head he was aiming for??/..no sign of the sliotar up there for sure...and just 8 weeks???...ah well sure it was only his head...if he's have aimed for his g**l**s with the back of his hand???..maybe he'd have got 6 months?? mayotyroneman (Tyrone) - Posts: 1821 - 03/03/2009 13:43:11 222860 Link 0 |
