Controversy in Gaelic Games?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Any one know of serious cotroversies during a game which proved to be vital?

There was an u-21c'ship game in Tyrone this year where the ref had marked a point for the wrong team. Both teams believed at the end that it was a draw till the ref claimed that a team had won by 2 points. Obviously the team didnt question the ref but the other team was livid. An body any other stories to tell?

The Cargin - St Pauls antrim senior football final of 2000. Cargin were up by 6 in injury time, then St Pauls started a mass brawl cos they had nothing to play for - cargin got stripped of the titel and both teams were banned from the championship for 2 years. there was talk in cargin of the cup being thrown into loguh neagh out of pure spite - unfortunately that didnt happen!!!!

The one that springs to mind for me is Carlow v Laois in the '95 Leinster championship. Laois were awarded a ''point'' that was subsequently proven to be wide by the Sunday Game cameras. As the winning margain was a single point in favour of Laois , the O'Moore men graciously offered Carlow a replay, which they accepted. Laois won the replay (can't remember by how much though.)

On that gaa show that Des Cahill did that toured around Ireland, he told the story of the game where on the last minute of a game a team had a free in that was nearly a dead cert but the goalkeeper and a few more of the opposition climbed up onto the crossbar and saved the free as it was about to sale over the cross bar !!!! pretty controvercial id say, would have been funny to watch too

Sorry unrelated topic Tyr08 but i just have to ask HAG a question. Im heading down to Clonmel for a few weeks to work so if you know anything about the town, i just wondering if its any craic down there or should i bring plenty of entertainment with me? Also very important is if they have a few decent pubs and a decent bookies what with it being racing season an all.

In the 1965 Meath club final Kilbride played Skyrne.

Too young to be there myself but I have heard the story many times...

Martin Quinn (one of four Quinn brothers on the team, one of three on the Meath team at the time) had a free given against him for overcarrying coming out of defence. The story goes that Martin didn't take to this decision too kindly and became more than a little vexed. So much so that the referee had to send him off.
Again not taking this too kindly Martin, decided the best course of action was to sit on the ball and refuse to leave the pitch.

Apparently there wasn't too many lads from either Skryne or Kilbride that were willing to challenge Martin and get the ball back off him so the referee had to abandon the game.

County board later awarded the title to Skryne by default.

Some days back then, alas you proabbaly wouldn't see that like of that today..

Not really a controversial decision just a basic handlin error with catastrophic consequences. Sittin in the upper Hogan in 05 , Armagh v Tyrone in the last few minites when Armagh were cruisin and attackin for what looked like an easy score to put them i think 3 ahead , when John McEntee made a real lazy pass which was intercepted. That for me was the turnin point and led to Tyrones victory , and of course Tyrone did`nt do badly either.

You see the ref said after the game he thought he give him yellow before second yellow but he never recieved the first yellow and the ref admitted his mistake . So he got one yellow and red at same time even though he never got booked before that get it.

Something not right here Willie. Derry only ever won sam in 93. there was no back door then.
But of course Tyrone always need the ref to help them beat Derry.
