Folks while I was not at the match today or haven't seen it yet, but to lose by 12 points to Dublin is nothing short of humiliating, and I really think we are all fooling ourselves thinking that Galway are some sort of a major hurling power with a chance of winning the All Ireland. Maybe Ger Loughnane doesn't not look so bad after today, as bad and all as things were under Ger, we certainly never lost by 12 points to Dublin. Maybe all this shows, that management were never the problem all along, and that something is seriously wrong with Galway hurling at senior level. gilly0512 (Galway) - Posts: 1176 - 15/02/2009 15:16:05 207212 Link 0 |
Someone told me today in Pearse that the hurlers had gone down bt 12 points. Found it hard to believe then and find it hard to believe now. Dear God!! mossbags (Galway) - Posts: 1089 - 15/02/2009 17:56:45 207300 Link 0 |
A family member recently had a conversation with an old Athenry hurler who told of a game recently were a sub from Beatha was brought on. A player already on the field from another club refused to pass to him for the duration of the game simply because of his club affiliation. It was this old players impression that if the Galway hurlers could play other counties with the same venom they play each other; no team could stop them. The senior team is a team in name only, and as such deserves no support. Why, in this economic climate, should supporters be expected to shell out hard earned money to see a bunch of individuals who put no pride in their county and who consistently disappoint and embarrass the fans? 12 point defeat by Dublin? Time to apologise to Loughnane and disband the current team. If they don't want to play for county, then they shouldn't. Simple as that. festinog (Galway) - Posts: 3151 - 15/02/2009 18:59:00 207354 Link 0 |
Was at the match today, firstly very disapointed with the attendance. I dont think its good enough to make the excuse that the team dont deserve support given how badly they played. A true supporter supports their team through bad times and good. All others are bandwagon supporters and do not deserve to comment on the team or make suggestions on who should be on or off the team. Festinog, we're all very very dissapointed leaving Parnell Park today, but its still feb and if we meet Dublin in the summer with a full team.....they'll be bet out the gate! If your jumping ship already, we're better off without you. TVH (Galway) - Posts: 30 - 15/02/2009 20:43:06 207505 Link 0 |
Let us be slow to judge. It's only the first game of the league. Of course Ger Loughnane should still be there, but he's not and that post mortem is unfortunately well over. On the positive side a very shrewd move on the part of the hurling board was that they quietened the person who would be most venimous in his attack this week by making him manager. Let's hope that he is shown an awful lot more mercy and sympathy than he has shown others in the past!!! The phrase 'People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones' just won't leave one's head. Let's hope for the sake of this county that this is not the end, or is it simply going to be a great year for Dublin hurling. Yes TVH a full team. Let's see what that comes to mean!!!!!!! mochuck (Galway) - Posts: 5 - 15/02/2009 21:11:17 207548 Link 0 |
was a shocking result alrite. a disgrace to be fair, things can only get better. when we have all the portumna lads back and still alot out injured, it will be a totally different team that would beat dublin anytime. mcintyre needs time to get it right. alot of them out there 2day wont even mak championship panel Lionman (Galway) - Posts: 52 - 15/02/2009 21:14:28 207555 Link 0 |
"Jumping ship already"??? You funny man, when does your "already" begin? Was it last year when Cork finished our championship? Was it '88 when we last won the AI? I was at both matches (including a certain AI in 1980) and have been supporting Galway hurling a lot longer than you can possibly know, and it is my contention that this bunch of contenders do not deserve the travelling publics support. festinog (Galway) - Posts: 3151 - 15/02/2009 21:39:00 207587 Link 0 |
festinog, you are everything thats wrong with galway hurling. fair enough it was a disgrace being bet by dublin but to say they dont deserve support is ridiculous. too many people say this every year. i think loughnane should have been given another year or two but he wasnt given it and no matter who is in charge we should all get behind them. fuinneog (Galway) - Posts: 7 - 15/02/2009 21:45:03 207595 Link 0 |
As long as people keep thinking it's disgraceful to be beaten by our lads, happy days! You were beaten by a better team on the day and a better team period without Canning and maybe Lee. Yes, in July Galway with Joe would more than likely beat us but not 'out the gate.' Those days are gone. Best thing that ever happened Dublin was NOT beating Wexford and Cork in the chamionship last year when we should have done. way too early to make a judgement but a shock result no doubt. portumna hurlers would hav been a loss and i tink if memory serves me rite dublin came very close to beating galway either in 07 or 08 when loughnane was there. One swallow doesn't make a summer. Sacking Loughnane is wat i would be worried about - absolutely crazy decision. Plus taking on a guy to replace who has absolutely no inter-county hurling credentials . Sum1 like anthony daly or nicky english shud hav been luked at for the job. Huge mistake and cud be made pay a heavy price in da summer . . . Kinnear (Westmeath) - Posts: 158 - 15/02/2009 23:04:17 207708 Link 0 |

Dublin were not at full strength either, they were short several players from last year, their best forward (O'Callaghan) only came on with 15 mins to go when the game was won, and they (like Galway) were trying out new players or players in new positions. I'm "everything" that wrong with Galway hurling? Lads, I think you're on crazy pills. I would have said that the hurlers habit of calving every other game and failure to deliver consistent winning performances, a total lack of forward momentum over the last few years despite the constant introduction of amazing talent, as well as their inability to talk to each other on or off the pitch is with wrong with Galway hurling. Or maybe I'm missing something. But if it makes it easier for you to blame me, then fire away. But for the record, I was no where near the grassy knoll in Dallas, or the bridge of the Titanic. festinog (Galway) - Posts: 3151 - 16/02/2009 01:08:00 207791 Link 0 |
Its only a league match. We got to the league final last year and some use it was to us in the championship. I think he is trying different things out and will soon come close to a settled team. I'd say if we met Dublin in June it would be a different result. Clash-of-da-ash (Galway) - Posts: 927 - 16/02/2009 01:18:02 207792 Link 0 |
Festinog, they are doing their best, if they are no good, it is not their fault; We have a very average team, something similar to the team Cork have playing now; We cannot blame them for not being able to beat teams that are way better than them; SAMMYTHEBULL (Galway) - Posts: 1646 - 16/02/2009 02:01:58 207800 Link 0 |
I note that nobody has addressed the rather more disturbing point made by festinog regarding club rivalries/hatred being continued at county level. What a sad reflection this is on galway hurling, and of course it is true. Anybody at yesterdays game would know that the majority of the current group of players representing Galway are most certainly not worthy of wearing the jersey and have no pride in the jersey. No doubt mcintyre will be the scapegoat this time round just like loughnane, hayes, lane etc. before him. ke168 (Galway) - Posts: 13 - 16/02/2009 09:05:52 207829 Link 0 |
The tribune will be good this week. Joe Canning should go to America for the summer and enjoy himself. nailhimstones (Galway) - Posts: 114 - 16/02/2009 09:06:08 207830 Link 0 |
We need to seriously rethink our place in the pecking order of hurling counties.Dublin have beaten us twice in the League in Parnell Park in recent years.. I think it's time to ditch the snobbish attitude we have when playing the so-called 'weaker counties'.. themond (Galway) - Posts: 15 - 16/02/2009 11:12:05 207924 Link 0 |
