ALONSO could not have won an all ireland medal as he was in Kells in the Summertime. and only for a month in which time he only played gaelic for leisure

Alonso was in Meath when he was 14, and it was for the summer when schools were closed and schools' football competitions are long finished. So Alonso did not win any football medals when he spent a summer in Meath, he had a few kickabouts with the locals and that was it. FACT!

Alonso never ever ever so much as played in the pre lims of any vocational school tournament as he never went to school here! He was here for a summer and kicked around with the local kids at a few training sessions.

That story about Alonso is correct. I remember him telling me about it when we were taking part in the Scor that year.

Here's a GAA question for you - which two Ulster counties have played in a senior All-Ireland semi-final despite never having won the Ulster championship?

Patrique: Fermanagh are the only Ulster county that have never won the Ulster Championship in football and contested the semi final in 2004. Is the second team a hurling team?

What year was premier league formed? David Rochastle was with Arsenal till 92, went on to play for Chelsea. Think MarK Bosnich is correct.

Bald Eagle County: All Posts: 614 184534 Dellboy - Martin O'Neill was indeed a runner up twice in All-Ireland Finals, one with Derry Minors, and the other with St Columb's College, Derry in the Hogan Cup Final, not sure of the years though but i do know he was banned from playing Gaelic Football by the GAA when he signed to play soccer for Distillery. I also think he won the MacRory Cup with St Malachy's, Belfast but not sure if they got to the Hogan final or not. I'm almost certain that's all correct, if not i'm sure someone will point out my mistakes! Thanks bald eagle that is why i asked what honours did he won on the gaa because never knew he played and bocerty taking pops at me because i asked .

Martin O' Neill was not a member of the WINNING St Columb's team. That was in 1965.

In 1969 he was on the Derry minor team that lost to Cork in the minor final. Old age made me say 1970 because I have only been at two football finals and one of those was in 1970 when Galway won the minor.

After leaving St Columb's O'Neill ended up at St Malachy's College, and played on the losing team in the Hogan final.

The following year he was playing for the school again, and also playing for Distillery at soccer. My own school, St Mary's in Belfast somehow put together a football team, for the first and last time. The sides were due to meet in the MacRory final at Casement, and the interest was huge, about 10,000 expected at a school match.

The GAA would not allow the game to be played on their pitches. So the game went ahead at Omagh CBS school, on a Wednesday afternoon.

A handful of us mitched off from school, stood at the motorway to hitch to Omagh and were picked up by the team coach. TV cameras, hundreds of journalists, as the O'Neill story was now big news, and about a dozen supporters. The GAA loved shooting itself in the head in those days.

As it was John McKiernan caught every ball at mid field and we won easily. We also won the Hogan cup that year.
