Martin O'Neill, Hogan cup final with St Malachy's College Belfast, and All Ireland minor final with Derry played soccer for his country.

Gerry Armstrong, Antrim senior footballer, all Ireland vocational schools hurling winner, also played soccer for his country.

Mal Donaghy, Tommy Armstrong and Pat Jennings also played soccer for their country and Gaelic games. Probably quite a few others.

Au contraire, wingwonder, I thought I was being adult in recognising reality, and that the "dreamers" were being childish.

No dhorse - you're thinking of Dinny Bán O'Sé - a fisherman out of Dingle who landed a big job in a US fishing port. His main job was keeping the decks clear of dead fish and he thus became the first Kerryman employed in the US as a plaice kicker!

Yep, both Tommy Bowe and Johnny Douglas played midfield for the county minors when 16, before switching to rugby and soccer respectively. In fact, one of our county minor midfielders last year, Mark Connolly, has been a youth player at Wolves for about a year or so now, he's only 16 aswell! Had to actually get clearance from Wolves to play in the last two games this year as it ran into pre-season training at Wolves, he was only back the night before each.

He was a dustbin man who used to have to kick a lever on his truck every day and he developed a really strong kick. He won the superbowl 18 times.

I'd say rugby was like playing draughts after that experience!

Ollie and Jayo, I saw Cooley playing a few times in the 70's and 80's and they had a good team. Won a few County Finals and i attended two. They were a hard enough team and did'nt pull back in the tackle (or row). I'd say it was only a small step down for him to be able for the rugby !!

Its great to have a choice lads. But I would never play for either Ni or Rangers. Just the way I was brought up. Different beliefs..

Ah different beliefs, its people like you who are keeping bigotry in sport. Cut your nose of to spite your face is another one that springs to mind. The more people froma nationalist background that play for NI the better. It may take time, but the likes of McGinn, O'Neill etc have made something of themselves. They were active menbers of GAA and proud members too.

ONeill took the Armagh senior team over to train with Celtic or so the story goes. He made the Celtic team watch the All Ireland Champions train a hard session. The Celtic players were amazed to find these players were amateurs and played for the love of the game.
You can take the man out of GAA but you cant take the GAA out of the man, he is a man who remembers where he came from. And was proud to play for NI.

What is you point gottabetrue. Are you annoyed cause I dont have the same ideals as you?? Thats laughable. Its very easy to come on this board and write big paragraphs dictating what you think should be. Dont know why I'm even replying to you. Its pointless.

Peter Bracken, prop with Harlequins, formerly Bristol and Connacht, played club football and hurling in Offaly. A big man. Huge.

There was a dublin club player Richie Byrne (I think that was his name) who plaed for Motherwell. While there he flew back to play for his club in a championship clash, which did not go down well with the then manager Terry Butcher. It caused a bit of a stir in the media in scotland at the time. I think he is playing in england now.

Celtic also have a former cavan minor playing on the first team. His name escapes me at the moment as I am not a follower of that particular club. They have a bit of a tradition with the likes of Sean Fallon (Sligo) Packie Bonner (Donegal) Neil lennon (Armagh) They also had a an Armagh goalie in the 50s . On the same team they had Alan McKnight and Anton Rogan. Anton once famously caught the ball above his head in a scottish league o give away a penalty.
