Late Late Show Celebrates 125 years of the GAA

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Actually, Seán Óg Ó Ceallacháin is from Limerick if my memory serves correctly. However, the point that people are making is still accurate. Without the likes of D.J. Carey, Brian Whelehan, Tony Browne or a multitude of great hurlers from the 70s or 80s (like Jimmy Barry Murphy, Joe Cooney or Joe Dooley), it was always going to be a let-down. In the end, it was just a series of interviews, nothing more, nothing less.

Things RTE did wrong :
1. Des Cahill should have presented that show, he always does a mighty job on "Up for the final". Even if it wasnt a late late show, RTE could have easily called it "A tribute to GAA", it didnt have to be the late late show. Pat Kenny showed what he knows about GAA, i.e. nothing.
2. Starting with a guy who gave his life to English soccer was wrong. Start the show with Brian Cody and Mick O'Dwyer - the greatest coaches in either code.
3. What was Pat Kenny doing showing Dara O'Se a photo of Dooher lifting the cup. Rub his nose in it was it? What was O'Se supposed to do/say?
4. Hardly a clip from a great game, e.g. Maurice Fitz's point v Dublin, Mulligans goal, DJ Carey v Clare a few years ago, Wexford v Cork, Clare/Wexford/Offaly/Armagh/Tyrone/Donegal winning their first All-Irelands for years, something.
5. Brush Sheilds- need i say more.

Starting with the Saw Doctors was good to be fair.

The only way it could have got worse was if Richie Kavanagh had done a song....

A dreadful tribute to an organisation that has given the people of Ireland so much.

Surely there was 10 minutes they could have spared for ladies football, camógie and handball. Where was Ducksie Walsh? They didn't talk to Cora Staunton or Angela Downey...it basically turned into Dub vs Kerry in '70s!

Even hurling got a raw deal...little talked about Clare/Wexford's breakthrough in the '90s. Even in the football there was little mention of the Ulster breakthrough in the '90s.

Introduced first guest amazingly a Soccer player/pundit as an exponent of 'The beautiful game' Good way to get a GAA celebration rolling Cruel, small and personal what he did to Ó Sé imo!

What really got on my wick was this percieved idea that Dublin GAA = St Vincents. Bertie parroting on about St Margarets, St Vincents, Erins Hope etc; when he actually played and i a member of Whitehall Colmcille. He hadn't a bloody clue.
I thought that it was very unbalanced in terms of the Gaelic Games that were profiled. Most of the talk was of football, very little on hurling, nothing on camogie or handball. They had one token ladies footballer and they didn't even interview her!
They had Sean O'Ceallachain and Michael O Muircheartaigh which was great but no mention of Michael O Hehir. With the guests they had, there was so much potential but it was very disappointing overall which was a shame.

Although i thought des cahill did alright last night, in reality the road to croker 2008, which was on over christmas as a highlight of the 2008 series, wasn't much better. pretty much the same people, the same anecdotes.

in my opinion there hasn't been a decent GAA programme since end to end left utv. logie was a real gaa man who had the obvious presenting and journalist talents to keep the thing interesting.

it had an ulster agenda, of course it did, but it had a self-concious ulster agenda, if that makes sense. i remember john o'mahoney was a regular contributor, someone i always like to listen to. they got people on and asked them questions relating to the topic being discussed, or relating to the ulster county being discussed. they didn't invite someone on to set the programme's agenda for them, in the vain hope they'll have a story from 1978 that might be funny and nobody might not have heard yet. a huge difference.

I posted my thoughts on this debacle earlier on, and for some unknown reason the editor felt like not posting any of it. Don't feel like going through it all again but needless to say it was a joke and most of my post has been gone through by other posters anyway, like the Dublin/Kerry thing, Brush Shiels, Pat Kenny, whole thing was just a disaster and a disgrace to the GAA. But what do we expect of RTE and the Late-Late in fairness.

I did not see the show.

Dellboy and myself do not watch foreign channels, we were watching "The History of Linfield" on BBC at the same time.

Trileac, only one poster mentioned Dublin and Kerry as deserving the whole show. The show was put on by RTE, based in Dublin who present sport for the city to comsume. The same goes with much of the media. Over half the population lives in Dublin, so the media aim for that audience. That is why the poor Dubs are built up every year.

But most posters seem to be in agreement that the show was useless. With Pat Kenny on it I am not surprised.

you didnt miss much patrique. Can u imagine how dooher must have felt when kenny showed that picture to o se and basically said "look at that you loser, how does it make you feel". An embarassment for the 3 men involved, espically kenny. If Tyrone men think the GAA started in 2003 then the Dubs obviously think the reall date is 1975. So much about how Dublin saved the GAA and the golden years no mention of the great teams who went before. Honestly was there any reference to the GAA history before the 70's except for the civil war. How embarassing was Brush sheils also??

Extremely disappointed with the show last night. Same old faces. A celebration of 125 years it was not. Very little about the early days and the great teams of old. Very little hurling either and not a Corkman to be seen bar Cooney. Also, I have to agree with shaneanthony and pinkie regarding Darragh Ó Sé. Did Kenny have to humiliate him like that? Very childish, even Dooher looked embarrassed sitting next to him. Hopefully the upcoming TG4 series will make up for it.

Dammit i missed that "history of Linfield" as well! lol

Would likely have been alot better executed than the late late attempt at honouring the history of a sporting organisation.

at last something we all agree on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was pretty grim viewing to be honest, all the Gaa stars of years gone by sitting in the audience and we were subjected to Eamon Dunphy Eileen Dunne Brush Shields and Pat Kenny. Dear oh dear I hope RTE realise just how much of a balls up they made of that show.

When the seventies are mentioned to me, the first name that springs to mind is Limerick. They re-emerged after 30 years and dominated the hurling headlines for about 5 years. anyone who remembers the impact Clare made inthe 90s will know what I mean. Limerick however with Pat Hartigan, Grimes, Foley and the "great" Eamon Cregan were possibly a better team than Clare.

Kilkenny had arguably their best team ever, built on the axis that was Keher, Delaney and Purcell. Cork had a three in a row hurling team, and great duels with a top class Wexford team.

In football Cork had a wonder team in 1973, destroying Tyrone and then Galway in the semi and the final, and then disappeared. Derry had a very good side, as did Galway and Roscommon.

A good decade indeed, but there have been better.

RTE hang your collective heads in shame! Nothing short of an insult to 30 proud counties of Ireland!

Pat Kenny - completely out of his depth! The man knows nothing of GAA! Nor rugby either! He didn't even recognise Conor O'Shea and tried to change the subject when Des Cahill pointed him out so as to disguise his ignorance! The snubbing of Mickey Harte was insulting! Showing Dara Ó Sé a picture of Brian Dooher lifting Sam was childish and embarrassing! Stick to the Toy Show Pat!

Brush Shields - Car-crash tv!

Eamonn Dunphy and Bertie Aherne - Cringe! An insult to genuine GAA folk!

The GAA does not revolve around Gaelic Football! An insult to hurling, camogie, handball and Ladies Football!

An insult to the ordinary GAA players who never got to play for their county!

An insult to inter-county GAA players who never got to play for either Kerry or Dublin!

The guy that did the impersonations? So not funny! The reference to Mick O'Dwyers teeth was disgraceful!

Overall - a shambles of a programme!

Patrique,

sorry to be pedantic, in response to a post from one of HS's greatest pedants, but over half the population down here do not live in Dublin.
