Dr McKenna Cup Squad 2009

stonedog is right on this one. how can one player who is totally rubbish make a panel before more talented players in the county like liam mckibben or conner laverty its just stupidity. sure ross can give a player a chance in the mckenna cup but at least pick a player that is worthy of making an impact in the championship when it matters.

Rory was going to be given a chance on Sun but had been struck with flu and so wasn't available for selection. He'll get his chance again and hopefully prove he's up to the challenge. Definitely has potential but a big step up from playing Div 3 & 4 football for the last few years, but he as many attributes to compete and a fantastic left foot and excellent free taker. A good left footed free taker would have beaten Armagh last year in Clones.

Good win on Sunday, not a great performance but a wins a win.Thought Danny Hughes looked sharp thou. Thought id open up the discussion a bit about the McKenna cup squads and what players have been given chances and where there from. Here are the two squads from the previous years 2007 and 2008,i'll let u cast your own judgement on what teams have been heavily represented or not so,players who have been given a chance and the players that have been able to hold down a place in our best squad. 2007 Bernard Connell (Drumgath) Aidan Burns (Castlewellan) Adrian Carville (Bryansford) Martin Cole (Rostrevor) Darren Cunningham (Saval) Barry Doran (Longstone) Kevin Gracey (Downpatrick) Conor Gribben (Bryansford) Eoin Henry (Warrenpoint) Stephen Kearney (Mitchels) Brendan Loughran (Shamrocks) Jack Lynch (Drumgath) Padraig Matthews (Clonduff) Ruairi McArdle (Castlewellan) Martin McClean (Kilcoo) Michael McVeigh (Castlewellan) Colin McCrickard (Liatroim) Brendan McGourty (Ballycran) Fintan McGreevy (Castlewellan) Kevin McGuigan (Shamrocks) Colm Murtagh (Glenn) Brendan Rodgers (Mayobridge) Brian Sweeney (St Michaels) Peter Telford (Downpatrick) Stephen Toner (Bryansford) Kevin Duffin (Castlewellan) Declan Rooney (Burren) Peter Turley (Downpatrick) Peter Turley (Saval) Gareth Johnson (Ballygalget) and 2008 Declan Alder Carryduff John Clarke An Riocht Martin Cole Rostrevor Bernard Connell Drumgath Packie Downey Drumgath Liam Doyle Liatroim John Fegan Clonduff Dan Gordon Loughisland Conor Gribben Bryansford Danny Hughes Saval Jack Lynch Drumgath Cathal Magee Mayobridge John Mc Areavey Tullylish Gary McArdle Annaclone John McCarthy Loughisland Ciarán McGovern Burren Kevin McGuigan Shamrocks Kevin McKernan Burren Brendan McVeigh An Riocht Colm Murney Rostrevor Ronan Murtagh Ballyholland Darren O'Hanlon Ballymartin Damien Rafferty Shamrocks Martin Rafferty Shamrocks Brendan Rooney Mayobridge Ronan Sexton Mayobridge Ryan Stranney Loughisland Damian Turley Downpatrick Peter Turley Downpatrick Peter Turley Saval

dont know much bout fitz. dont know which magee you are talking about but they dont seem up to the task, lynch isnt showing his true form. hes playing like a man under alot of pressure from the fans which he is. maybe the fans shud just get of his back a little

Haven't started training yet. A players meeting on Sun to establish the plan for the season ahead and then likely to start training the following Sunday. I imagine it could be a difficult season but a few young guys have been blooded in Div 4 and definitely have the potential to more than hold their own in Div 3. However like most teams it will depend upon the attitude and committment of the players as to what they will achieve and also a bit of luck with injuries which has completely deserted the team the last couple of years. A JFC and Div 3 survival would have to be the target and in my opinion, obviously dependant upon the factors mentioned, achieveable. We shall wait and see...

What Newry club do you play for?

Good performance against Tyrone today, think Louis Sloan and Hugh Davey should feature highly this year, no doubt, allthough hopefully Down get a bit more out of Louis he plays midfield for his club. Defnitely these two players should start in championship. Magee from Ardglas also has steel abut him but i think it will be harder for him to nail a championship place as a forward, maybe Eoin McCartan will come back in and Benny Coulter will be an automatic Championship starter and where will John Clarke play this year, dont think he was great in chamionship last year as forward. If we can beat Tyrone by 7 points on any day and should have been more its definitely encouraging to say the least.

where are yous all today? yous are usually pretty quick at geting on ross and djs backs so way not give them a bit of praise after yesterday? ok it wasnt the championship but Down can only beat whats put in front of them, and the tyrone team was alot stronger than expected.

think stonedog may have a special word of praise for lynch, or will he just sweep his preformance under the carpet cause hes not a div1 player (so in stonedogs words should even be there)

stonedog keeping a low profile. lynch had a brilliant game and michael magee got 4 points and was out in front for everything. played very well.
the whole team played well, john boyle had a good reading of the game i thought, danny hughes has some engine, hugh davey was super, noone played bad they were all really good!

It really bugs me that so many Down "fans" seem to have it in for Jackie Lynch. The people who are on Jackies back all the time probably never kicked a ball for their club sides, never mind their county. It is very easy to be critical from the comfort of the stand. If you are going to a game, support your team and stop slagging off individual players.

Agree, great display particularly by Davey and Sloan. Danny Hughes keeping consistent, and overall backs performed well keeping all but two of Tyrone scores to Stephen O'Neill. Any thoughts on Joe Ireland ? Dan & Ambrose bonded well in midfield last year, I always think Lynch looks a bit out of place, but Ireland did impress, and could grow into a strong midfield role (I'm assuming Ambrose will not be the same after his spleen operation, and we may need a partner for Dan). Overall good team performance, will walk over Monaghan wed if they play the same, and credit to Ross/DJ for sticking with the experimental team against Tyrones big names.
