Fitzy, Dunne, Storey and Dempsey are all-time Wexford greats that would grace any of ours or anyone elses teams. Outside of that were some really good players but I cant see that theyd get onto Kilkenny's team. Or some of the other teams of the last 10 years.

Pinkie is right. There are some seriously deluded Wexford fans here. Unless a serious strategic plan is introduced in Wexford to improve hurling from under 12 upwards, we will never win anything ever again. We are not a good team. And whats on the county team is the best of whats there more or less. And they will struggle to beat Offaly and Dublin next year. Anyone who says otherwise will be proven wrong next summer.

HAG_AND_CHEESE County: Tipperary Posts: 1108 Haha that was a low blow HAG_AND_CHEESE bringing up that post again but I'll forgive you. Pinkie, I am being realistic, read back through the posts I've said that the recent Wexford team is rubbish but I've also tried to show that Munster hurling is not much better than the current Wexford team (and it's not lets be realistic). Results have underlined that. The other argument is that the 96 team is about 10 times better than the current Wexford team, the other issues that was I was stating that they'd probably beat any current Munster team most days of the week (the 96 team), if Munster teams can only beat the current Wexford team by 3 or 4 points. You basically said that the Wexford team of 96 was one of the worst teams to win an All-Ireland I don't see that at all (they are better than any team around today bar the current KK team). Also would you not agree that the players I mentioned shouldn't get the respect they deserved as being great players: Dunne Fitz Storey Fenlon and O'Gorman As big headed as O'Gorman is I don't think he actually gets the credit he deserves because he was in my opinion one of the greats of Wexford hurling. Please just give your opinions on that claims I'm making. I never said that there aren't problems with the current Wexford setup. We have not had a settled team in my opinion since the last Leinster we won. We never seem to have a united front, there are always issues, injuries, guys who don't want to play and of course the talent just isn't there compared to what was there in 96. I think players actually know they are not good enough and trying to improve they hide behind arguments and injury or just not togging out.

Galway 87 and 88 should be right up there with the best. Robbed of the 3 in a row by unsporting tactics. Said Keady played a match in New York and was not allowed play in the semi-final which was like the All Ireland that year as Antrim were in the final. Cyrill Farrell blew it. There was 5-6 Tipperary players that played in New York and Boston that summer and shouldn't have been let play but Farrell didn't want to be mister unpopular. Tipp couldn't beat Galway by playing fair and have to cheat to win an All Ireland.

Nick I'm only getting around to reading your post now, and firstly while I wish I was only 16, sadly I'm a long way from that, and I'm more than old enough to remember the great Galway hurling team of the 80s. Now there was a great team, but I'm not that sad and pathetic that I would start spouting off such utter rubbish such as the Galway team of the 80s would beat the present Kilkenny team, whether they would or not we will never know? The fact is that the present Kilkenny team is probably the greatest team we will ever see, and how you or your sad fellow county man who initiated this thread can claim that a team who one one lucky All Ireland in 96 is better that the current Kilkenny team should be treated with the contempt that it deserves.

I'd say this fella is the only wexford person who believes this. Larry Murphy - better than Eoin Larkin!!!

Between this lad and Jim, youse must be wondering what we are smoking/drinking in Wexford! You'd not find another person in Wexford to agree with this i reckon.

You don't agree with comparing teams but by calling a team the greatest of all time you have to compare them with other teams.

Again as I keep repeating I'm not making that claim fatboy slim. For God sake if you are going to reply please read the posts.
I have said a million times that this KK team is the best team I've ever witnessed. All I'm saying is that like any team that has won an All-Ireland in the past 500 years there are alway some great players on these teams just like there were on the Wexford team of 96.

So much to debate. The original post omits JJ Delaney and Larkin from a team selected from the two. Now I loved Larry O'Gorman, but JJ is the best left half I have seen, he has everything.

Wexford didn't put down any structures after winning, which is why they haven't really built on that success. In 1997 as we all eagerly waited to see if Wexford's strength could rattle Clare in the final, Wexford went down meekly to Tipp in the semi.

So they were not a "great" team. And we ALL overuse the word great, but by no stretch copuld that Wexford team be called great.

Now I enjoyed watching them, and as I said earlier Dunne and Storey were top class, and Fitz in goal, but that was it. A lot of other good hurlers but not outstanding.

If I was asked to rate the teams from the 1990s I think Kilkenny 1992/93 might shade it over Offaly. I would have Clare in third place.

Um, I'm die hard Offaly and I think that our 90s team was the team of the 1990s (four all ireland appearances, winning two), but even I find it hard to imagine that team beating the current Kilkenny team. This Kilkenny hurling team are the greatest of all time. Wexford were good, but not as good as Clare and Offaly in the 1990s. I think if you took the best players from the Offaly and Clare 90s teams and pitted them against the current Cats team, they'd give them a run for their money (10 years ago). I remember the two years Offaly went down to Wexford in 96 and 97, but I also remember manys a hiding dished out to ye too. I think the current Kilkenny team would beat ye by 10 points. No disrespect, I was delighted for Wexford in 96. Liam Griffin annoyed the hell out of me though.
