2great teams of da last 20 years. Who would win if they met today? The standard now isnt is good as in was in da mid ninties altough you cant take away from Kilkennys success D Fitzhenry -v- PJ Ryan - Fitzhenry hands down C Kehoe -v- M Kavanagh - Two tight Tigerish markers draw G Cushe -v- N Hickey - Similar hurlers. Hickey edges it J O Conner -v- J Tyrell - Renouned for their massive clearences Tyrell better though R Guiney -v- T Walsh - Both Tenacious - More steel in Guiney though L Dunne -v- B Hogan - Has to be Dunne. B Hogan UNPROVEN L O Gorman -v- JJ Delaney - Two great stick men. Larry O better leadership so he gets da nod A Fenlon -v- D Lyng -Work horses and unsung heroes - Draw G O Conner -v- Cha - Cha would win on skills but he would not be able for Georges heart, strenght and raw power - O Conner R McCarthy -v- E Larkin - McCarthy did it for 10 years. Larkin a Lot of catchin up to do - McCarthy M Storey -v- H Shefflin - Probably da two best men on da forty from da last 20 yrs. Shefflin gets da vote L Murphy -v- R Power - Both inconcistent but magical when they want to be - Level E Scallon -v- A Fogarty - Fogarty for his speed and concistency G Laffan -v- M Comerford - Only one winner here. Laffan. If he had of been born on the other side of da border God knows how many All irelands he would have won. T Dempsey -v- E Brennan - Both brilliant goal poachers. Ill have to go with Brennan though. Dat makes it Wexford 7 Kilkenny 5. If these teams could meet in a virtual match i reckon wexford 96 by 4 points DaPoultas (Wexford) - Posts: 38 - 11/12/2008 10:59:50 161779 Link 0 |
Read this post, was laughing at some of the selections. I said to myself, "This fella must be from Wexford". Looked at his "County". And guess what? I wasn't wrong! 3inarow08 (Kerry) - Posts: 2455 - 11/12/2008 11:26:19 161800 Link 0 |

He has to be taking the ****, but even if the sad lonley person isn't I reckon the Kilkenny team of today would beat the Wexford team of 96 by at least 15 points, EVERYTIME!! fatboy slim (Galway) - Posts: 80 - 11/12/2008 12:17:50 161862 Link 0 |

Wexford were knockin on da door for a while. 1993 was where dat team came from and should have had a league title and at least a leinster title dat year only for DJs infamous goal. Im not sayin Wexford 96 would hammer or even beat Kilkenny for definate but by God it would be some match. I was at a league match a couple of year ago in Ross and Gary Laffan gave Noel Hickey some runaround. Imagine what he would have done when he was in his prime. I think the Tipp side of 1887 could have beaten the Current kilkenny team. Hag_and_Cheese (Tipperary) - Posts: 6103 - 11/12/2008 12:50:26 161907 Link 0 |
Only one team in the history of hurling capable of beating Kilkenny 08 and thats Clare 95. No other team would come close to them. Loyal2TheRoyal (Meath) - Posts: 4522 - 11/12/2008 12:50:45 161908 Link 0 |

wouldnt consider wexford of 96 a great team in comparison to kilkenny... kilkenny have been more consistent over the last few years.. if i was to consider any team of the 90's to match them up it would be offaly Southern Dandy (Wicklow) - Posts: 789 - 11/12/2008 13:13:57 161945 Link 0 |
Sorry there but I'd have to agree that the Wexford team of 96 is not up there with any of the really great teams. Nick (Wexford) - Posts: 1100 - 11/12/2008 13:20:06 161954 Link 0 |
fatboy slim County: Galway Posts: 72 I think your post is just as sad and far fetched as his post. That was a very good Wexford team in 96 and that to me is a bit of an insult to the players on it. You are probably about 16 and couldn't name a Wexford player from that team. If you haven't heard of Storey, Fitz, O'Gorman, Liam Dunne, Fenlon and McCarthy I think I'd just keep my mouth shut. Infact Galway's current team let me think oh they have one very good player what's his name... can't think of it at the moment. That team never got beaten by much against any of the big teams, they were unlucky in a couple of league finals and there were alot of teams at that time which would be better than the current county teams at the moment like your own county, Limerick probably had their best team ever (and unfortunately for them they didn't win an All-Ireland) and although Cork peaked later they still had a team that is better the Cork of the past couple of year, Clare would still have been strong too. Offaly were still pretty strong and KK although definitely not the power they are today would still have had a pretty decent team. The fact they backed it up with a Leinster win the next year shows it wasn't just a flash in the pan. Unfortunately for them alot of the players were hitting the top of their game in 96 and 97, their age was starting to catch up on them but some great players. It's Ok to disagree with the post as I did but i think it's a bit of a low thing to do to try and belittle the achievements of those great players and the team of 96.
