St. Stephens Day for the racing and a rake of pints. A few winners make it the best day of the year !! Though come to think of it any day is a good one for a few creamy pints !!
I have to agree, i have only started to hit the local on christmas eve, this last few years and to tell you the truth its probably one of the best nights of the year. meeting up with cousins and relatives, old school friends etc.
Used to go out with the sister and mates all around Lucan village to do the Wren Boys. Me on bodhran and her on whistle. Silly clothes on us. I remember one year making £24 old money and that was about 1983!.....some money! Check out Wren Boys festival in Sandyford and rural fingal villages.
Heres the local Wren Boys song?? (Kind of a 'Three Blind Mice' air to it).
"The Wren, The Wren, the King of all birds, On St. Stephens's Day got caught in the furze, Although he was little his family was great, So rise up good landlady, give us a treat, Its money I want, its money I crave, If you dont give me money I'll dance on yer grave, But if you do treat me as one of the best, I swear that in heaven yer soul will be blessed, Hurrah me boys hurrah, me Lucan boys hurrah! So up with the kettle and out with the pan, Give me a penny to bury the Wren, Hurrah me boys hurrah....The Lucan Boys hurrah!!
