Paul and Tom Brewster.Paul use to be a powerhouse for fermanagh and Tom still plays for the county team one of fermanagh's greatest footballers. They both play midfield for Enniskillen Gaels. The best midfield club pairing in the country on there day. icecream (Fermanagh) - Posts: 45 - 04/12/2008 18:52:10 157189 Link 0 |

Would have to be Barry & Chris Prior from the Aughawillan club in Leitrim. Tough as nails! Barry showcased his toughness against Padraig Joyce in this years Connacht Championship! Leitrim Lad (Leitrim) - Posts: 264 - 05/12/2008 11:03:05 157655 Link 0 |

Has to be those lads from Scotstown Caufields - Gerard, Michael, Fergus McCarvilles (1) - Martin & Gerry McCarvilles (2) - Seamus & Jack Of course you had the Moyna's and McCruddens if that wasn't enough and you had always a few Sherrys in there too Apparently training was worse than games and rather than having a full time physio they had a full time Dentist. Fergus Caufield even knocked out one Armagh man before the ball was thrown up No wonder Sean McCague once said "There was no such thing as a late tackle ... once it happened the same day as a game" FarneyBoy (Monaghan) - Posts: 151 - 07/12/2008 23:12:05 159005 Link 0 |

Peadar and johnny-jo-meahail O' Flaherta from Baile-in-da-middle-of-nowhere were as hard as Massey Fergusons. They could down 17 shpuds in a shingle go they could and used to put glass into pints of the great black shtuf (just for the craic)...it'd put hair on the back o' der knee caps! They could knock out a bullock with a shingle headbutt...ooh ar! They used to plough the fields with their teeth. Think they played a bit of the oul peile na gaeilge so they would have to be the toughest men in the history of the association! sheepshooter (Meath) - Posts: 626 - 08/12/2008 12:33:06 159185 Link 0 |

Yep Farney Boy, those Caulfields and McCarvilles were a different breed altogether, the aul lad was at a few trainings in the 80's and said it was so physical sometimes there'd be full-blown brawls and no-one would step in to calm it down, just let it blow over, which took a while at times! Also heard a story about one of the Monaghan forwards(can't just remember which it was), and he got Fergus Caulfield to mark him every training at one time, and Fergus would knock lumps of him the whole training, every training, and he didn't mind one bit because he knew that he would never get near as much abuse in any match he'd ever play! And I'd well believe it! Monaghan's full-back line in the 80's would have to be one of the toughest there've been, with Fergus Caulfield and Gerry McCarville in there, along with a Sherry. mid-mon man (Monaghan) - Posts: 1680 - 08/12/2008 12:46:46 159203 Link 0 |

Actually, Kenneth and Trevor Mortimer are a frightening prospect! Pound for pound they are tougher than the brady lads... That's gas because I seem to remember Kenneth in '96 was having a huge year and said in interview prior to the All-Ireland 'Pound for pound, Mortimer's the best around' I remember Meath gimps singing it to him in the replay when another short lad Tommy Dowd took him for 1-3 from play then Reilly left him on his **** for the winning point. Thanks a million never thought I'd hear a Mayo man repeat that quote about K Mortimer. Hilarious! BeanPhaidin (Dublin) - Posts: 84 - 08/12/2008 15:09:32 159344 Link 0 |
