As I like to avoid political discussion, may I just say that it is a God awful song, one of Phil's worst, and there are a few contenders.

i agree i dont think playing irelands call is good, the national anthem is a lot better! its nothing to do with the players from northern ireland i just really dont like the song, i dont think it creates the same atmosphere as the national anthem at all!

MayoHollymount & Cavan_Slasher

northern Ireland isn't part of the Republic and so how would it be their national team?

Are you saying that Northern Ireland isn't apart of your national rugby team? Or are you just trying to be smart and telling me that the Republic isn't made up of 32 counties because either way you've made a porous point.

Like i said Irelands Call should be played whenever the 32 counties are being represented and Amhran na bhFiann should be kept for more divisional occasions such as when the ROI football team are playing. That makes sense no matter what warped way you twist my words.

is it that the majority have to appease the minority ? If that is the case we have lost the plot !!

Thats sort of non-compromising attitude which led to a divide in the first place, remember the anti-treaty fiasco of the 1920s?
Cop on Cavan_Slasher, surely you can spare a bit of lieniency or are cavan people even too mean for that?

Amhran na bhFiann is a proud and deeply respected song to the true Irish. I know I feel very passionately about it as do every one who has pride in their own country. For you to criticise it is totally insulting towards me and the Irish people. How do you support the GAA if you speak of it like that and how do you support Ireland similarily?

Could they just not resolve the issue by singing the Soldiers song in English for the Rugger fraternity?

146245 Hteam-if the northern team have a problem with our country's national anthem then they have a problem that we are effectively a separate country then them and should therefore form their own team. Also you say that how can we play a national anthem that doesn't represent everyone on their national team-northern Ireland isn't part of the Republic and so how would it be their national team?

are you actually serious with this trivil. First of all have you actually considered for one second the nationalists within the north who are not part of the republic but believe whole heartidly in a free and united ireland? you talk about this song like it is something which is dividing all of us and yet you can speak about throwing the northerners away like they mean nothing and that we should just leave your presious republic or 'Free state' as i should say alone. honestly some of you honestly some of you so called republicans from the south and north should really learn a wee bit about what you are talking about before you start shouting your mouths off.

i think that its brilliant that we have a team that represents the whole country a team that we can be proud of not like that excuse of a soccer ^&(*%$

146066 Watching any Irish rugby matches I get quite annoyed when I hear that song being sung. Amhran na bhFiann is our National Anthem and we shouldn't have to listen to a second excuse for a one. I know that it is for the northern Irish players that are playing and if it's the case that they want their own anthem then let them follow their soccer team and form a separate team to Ireland.Northern Ireland have been doing pretty well in soccer so let them try it at rugby if they insist on playing Ireland's call.We are Irish and our anthem is Amhran na bhFiann. If northern Ireland want to play with us then they can accept our anthem and get on with it.Otherwise I don't see a point in them joining with us.

Rugby be in Ireland is not a bigoted organisation like the Gaa and Soccer can be, Irish Rugby accomadates both communites and traditions, I think this should be appluaded. I think the gaa and fai should take note.

I honestly don't know what you mean northpole.
I was speaking out against rugby players not GAA Players. My post was fairly clear with no hidden meaning in it.
Get over yourself.

Ok, I have reread my post and what I should've said was you don't see Derry, Antrim, Down, Armagh, Fermanagh & Tyrone wanting to sing a different anthem to the the other Irish counties. Apologies for the confusion. I was not in any way trying to stir it up and apologise to anyone who thought I was.

"The Soldier's Song" is God Awful as well. Could we not have one of the many haunting slow airs, instead of some copy cat militaristic nonsense, a bit like "God Save the Queen".

Mayohollymount:

Move on! It's a song that attempts to unite both parts of the island! Take off the blinkers and please don't refer to yourself as 'true Irish' with an attitude like that! You're stuck in a time warp! Another armchair republican!

The Song, the teams, the players - i cant stand any of it in Croke Park..

Give them all gate i say..

If its not Amhrán na bhFiann - it shouldnt be any song in Croke Park..

Well unless maybe Simply the Best by Tina Turner or Living on a Prayer by the good man Jon the legend Bon Jovi himself..

Too much do gooding going on here - it was never broken so it shouldnt have been fixed....

Htaem, you claim you want to be fair and you make abusive comments about Cavan people. The meanest person i ever met was from Navan but i would be biased if i said all Navan people were mean cos they are not, so tone your language please !

Are you suggesting that Ireland's Call should be played when the 32 counties are playing sport ? Why should the Nationalist people of the 6 occupied counties of Northern IRELAND be subjected to that, that is NOT their National Anthem. Were they not kept down for long enough without the rest of us subjecting them to more of the same. They are as Irish as you or me. You will soon be banning them from speaking the Irish language as many of them do.!! Why dont you do a poll with the Northern posters on this board and ask them what they want played ... you would soon get your answer.!

Surely the best thing to do would be for you to hire/buy a digger and dig a MASSIVE trench right along the border, and when it's finished try and push Northern Ireland away from the Republic. Problem solved.

Give fat women the red card
