Ireland's Call

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Watching any Irish rugby matches I get quite annoyed when I hear that song being sung. Amhran na bhFiann is our National Anthem and we shouldn't have to listen to a second excuse for a one. I know that it is for the northern Irish players that are playing and if it's the case that they want their own anthem then let them follow their soccer team and form a separate team to Ireland.Northern Ireland have been doing pretty well in soccer so let them try it at rugby if they insist on playing Ireland's call.We are Irish and our anthem is Amhran na bhFiann. If northern Ireland want to play with us then they can accept our anthem and get on with it.Otherwise I don't see a point in them joining with us.

I agree with you 100%. If you are representing the island of Ireland then Amhrán na bhFiann is the anthem. The Irish and Northern Irish soccer teams are separate and sing separate anthems. The rugby is a 32 county team and the anthem should reflect that.
You don't see GAA Players from Derry, Antrim, Down, Armagh, Fermanagh or Tyrone wanting to sing their own anthem.
It's a joke.

Well really what matter to you does it make.

The game unites the country something politicans have been trying to do for years.

Its good to see people from The north and south from all sides of the community supporting one country.

The song may not be that great but if you listen to the words it makes a good comment in what the ireland rugby team stands for.

totally agree with you - but to be correct - irelands call isnt for the NORTHERN IRISH players, its for the non-irish players/unionists....

Note - Tyrones all-ireland 03 triumph, mentally was based upon our national anthem, with every player learning it and singing it aloud before leaving the bus & before throw in!.... a credit to them!

Attended last weekends All Black game and I've come up with my own protest at Irelands Call.
Once Anhran na BhFiann is over I sit down while Irelands Call is being sung. Not too many people in my section said anything and I think maybe 1 or 2 more would have liked to follow my lead. That ''song'' is a complete joke.
In O'Gara's autobiography he mentions that he always prefers to sing the National Anthem before a game as it stirs him more.
My protest will be continuing at this weekends match. Anyone else going who would consider doing the same thing?

God, when did Monaghan join Northern Ireland? I know I haven't been home in a couple of weeks but surely it hasn't happened this quick?

I doubt Ireland would lose Tommy Bowe as he is from Monaghan and has played football from Monaghan as far as I know.
Agree 100% that Ireland's Call shouldn't be played. Don't know why Amhrán na bhfiann is not played in away games either.

You're quite right Saffron, Bowe played midfield for Monaghan minors in the Ulster championship when he was 16, before quitting to focus on rugby.

Again Mayo people and their anti-Northern drivel.. So what if they sing two songs lads, its something different - like the haka. Irelands Call is quite a good song if you listen to the words - helps rise the team.

I think your a disgrace MayoHollymount and so is anybody who agrees with you. Irelands Call represents all 32 counties without any divide, Amhran na bhFiann only represents Catholics and Republicians, nobody can deny that fact.

How could you play an anthem that doesn't represent everyone on their national team? It doesn't make any sense, your probably just one of those typical bitter FF or SF followers who never moved on from 1916 and still feels overly patriotic about something you had no part in.

Worst of all was your idea to disband the national team and create another massive divide between ourselves and NI, sure while we're at it why don't we call a halt to the cease fires and burn the peace treaties so we can really start to have fun again. Honestly do you really believe that nonsense you posted because i sincerely hope you don't.

Now my post may be seen as an over-reaction but i honestly do feel very strongly about this particular issue and heres my opinion on the anthems. Amhran na bhFiann is solely a 26 county Anthem and has absolutely no business in any 32 county affairs, so i believe it should never be played for the Irish Rugby team or for any other 32 county event. Irelands Call should be our national anthem purely because it is a far more unifying song. Now who has a problem with that?

Hteam-if the northern team have a problem with our country's national anthem then they have a problem that we are effectively a separate country then them and should therefore form their own team. Also you say that how can we play a national anthem that doesn't represent everyone on their national team-northern Ireland isn't part of the Republic and so how would it be their national team?

Htaem, cant stand Irelands Call and I am told many of the rugby fraternity dislike it as well. What are we being told here... is it that the majority have to appease the minority ? If that is the case we have lost the plot !!
