Youngest Player to win All Ireland senior-county or club?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Don't know about the youngest, but my father-in-law has a photo of an Adamstown team that won the Wexford minor hurling championship in something like 1928 and he knows for a fact that his father was the only player under age on the team.

(But keep it quiet for God's sake)

Folks you are a long ways out on this one. It surly must be the "Boy Wonder" Tommy Murphy of Laois.

Tommy Murphy was born in Graiguecullen, County Laois in 1921. He was educated in the nearby Knockbeg College in Carlow. Murphy played for the Laois Minors when he was just 15 and came to prominence in 1937 when he played his first senior championship match against Offaly. Remarkably, considering at the time he was only a 16-year-old schoolboy, Murphy lined out against Kerry in the All-Ireland semi-final that same year.

During the late 1930s and 1940s Murphy was a household name all over Ireland. He won Leinster Provincial medals in 1937, 1938, and 1946. In all Murphy won eight Laois Senior medals and various Railway Cup medals for Leinster. His last game for Laois was against Wexford in the 1953 Championship and two years later he played the last game for his club, Graiguecullen.

146609 Straying slightly but Colm Cooper has 5 All Stars at 25. That surely is a record

Seán cavanagh also has 5 at 25 and id say Cooper is lucky to have some of them awards. However having said all that, Its about the team not the individual.

spot on superdub. Big Joe was 18 and had won an all Ireland minor medal the year before as a GOALKEEPER!! Think Jayo was young enough when he won his all Ireland but can't remember how old. Think Spillane was the youngest captain to lift the Sam (in the absence of the injured Mickey Ned!)

XXX had senior finals in mind but while others are going off in tangents I may as well throw in my tuppence worth Beano McDonald won a minor AL in '96 aged 15 and played again in the AL finals of '97 and '98 .

Per Ignem mentioned Tommy Murphy playing in a semi in '37 aged 16 but he never played in a final his best chance probably came in the replayed '38 final against Kerry when he scored 1-2 in the first half he was carried off injured after an infamous clash with Kerry defender Miko Doyle. Laois supporters and many others were outraged over that incident at the time believing a foul deed had being carried out. However Tommy Murphy himself always maintained the clash was totally accidental his good friend Mick Jones former Carlow and Laois player of that era told me that recently and I believe this should be put on record.

HokeyPokey, which All Stars exactly did Cooper deserve??? He won each one because he surpassed the standard bar of all other forwards, being as he as a player that could only be described as exceptional in skill, accuracy, vision, delivery of passes and all the rest of it. Contextualise your outrageous claims please...

Never mind young fellas. What about the boy in Wicklow who is 67 and won a county junior championship this year! And scored a goal in one match. There's a fella playing goals for a junior side in Dublin that I'd say is not far off that!

You could argue that he did not deserve 2002 allstar. Ronan Clarke got young player of the year and Cooper got an allstar at his expense. Not saying he didnt deserve it but, i would of thought the best young player should also have got an allstar. Was a cop out on the selectors part but to be fair it would have been hard to seperate them which is probably why they gave them an award each.

We feel hard done by also Samin10. Killian Young was the Young Player of the Year in 2007 and didn't get an All Star that year.

not really saying Clarke was hard done by but you would think if he got young player of the year then another young player should hardly have got his place on the allstar team. Could easily have went the other way as well.
