No contest - Mick Lyons.
In hurling in much the same era, Sylvie Linnane or Brendan Lynskey would have to be high if not top of the list.

Sorry Hokey, the first 3 are certainly among the hardest in Tyrone, but I think you are stretching it a bit with the other two.

Peter Canavan and Brian Dooher are both among the toughest/hardest players I have seen. Neither are big men, but both ferociously brave and very strong for their size. They'd have to be, to take the abuse they have both done for 15 years.

Trevor Giles was incredibly tough and didnt make any bones about it. Lyons definitely, Paudi O Se another one. Was at a game a few years ago between Mayo and Fermanagh the treatment Ciaran Mac was getting off the ball was unreal but he was only laughing at them. Mick Holden was one of the toughest of the Dubs without a doubt. Stephen O Brien from Cork another tough footballer and Henry Downey from Derry was like steel.

As far as the Dubs go Mick Holden was as tough as they came. Stephen O Brien from Cork and Henry Downey from Derry were tough footballers too.

john McDermot, Jack Sheedy, Keith Barr, Mick Lyons, Gerry Hargan & Coleman Corrigan, Anthony Moyles, McEntee's, Bellew, John Lynch, Colm McMemaman, Ja Fallon, Kevin Foley, Liam Harnan, Colm O'Rourke, Eamonn Heary, Brian Stynes, Séamus Quinn, Niall Buckley, Davy Dalton, Glen Ryan, Brendan Reilly, Anthony Tohill, tony Scullion, Brian Gilligan, Seamus & Henry Downey, Dermot McNicholl, Alan Mulholland, Dermot Early snr, TJ Kilgallon, Peter Forde, Conor Deegan, Brian Burns the list could go on all day Seán Kavanagh? He's certainly strong and physical but rolling around the ground, diving in '08 hardly makes him tough!

Every county has their candidates for this. From a Monaghan perspective I'd say Gerry McCarville and Fergus Caulfield, toughest overall, probably Mick Lyons alright.

Jason Sherlock. It's the little fellas that get the knocks off the big fellas that are tough.
It's easy to be tough when you weight about 15 stone and stand at over 6 foot.
Canavan was a tough little man too, he probably had a bit more bulk than Sherlock tough.

Agree with ya there samin10 re Martin Shovlin. My own club mate, doesn't look big but he is as wiry and tough a customer as they come. The abuse I've seen that man take is unreal. Just keeps on truckin though!

Fergus Cauflied

If you never heard of him ask someone who watched footy in the 80's ....

It was after watching a game with him playing that someone once said there was no such thing as a late tackle once it happened on the same day

Mullins was the hardest man, someone said Jacko was tougher, he was a tough and great player too but he came on the scene after Mullins had recovered from a car crash which left him with all sorts of breaks and ailments and went on to win an all ireland, thats a tough body, mind and soul. The comment about small men being tougher is a fair comments too.
