I was too young to see Stefan in his prime but he was always a class corner forward, serious eye for goal. Of the players that I've seen since my favourites would be Nicky Malone and Aaron Hoey, both played in numerous positions and captained the senior side with distinction.

I don't have recollection but apparently all time is meant to be Stephen White
Although, from my own era - his son Stefan White would be my favourite definitely!
Agree Stephen Melia was an absolutely brilliant and consistent servant.

My Current favorites would be Aaron Hoey and Paddy Keenan (All though he was off form last year). I also like Jamie Carr but he has commitment issues.

Some other worthy mentions would be Damian Reid, Seamus O'Hanlon, Peter Fitzpatrick, Johnny McDonnell.

There are loads I'm sure left out there. . . . so keep em coming.

And before anyone says it JP Rooney is not in the reckoning for this. A Fine player - but not in this caliber . . .

have to agree with you ther Kudos Damien reid was a star also Johnny McDonnell was a great forward could make a goal opportunity out of nothing and had a great head for the game a delight to watch!!! could do with a few of him in the team now. Ollie Mcdonnell was also another one of my favourites.

JP Rooney definately deserves to be among these people. He's among the classiest forwards I've ever seen play. His career has been dogged by injury but even so he is one of the best players to don the red jersey. I sense a bit of an anti-JP thing on this board, completely unnecessary and uncalled for! Definately agree with the rest Damien Reid and Stefan White are true Louth heroes. I think players like Colm Judge have the potential to become a Louth great in the future.

Don't get me wrong in my post.
I don't think there is necessarily an anti JP Rooney mentally on this board.
The only reason I posted that is because a lot of good threads got ruined in the past by some people constantly "bigging up" JP in them.
JP is definitely a quality player, no doubt - but just not ALL STAR material.
I would put JP in the same category as players like Martin Farrelly, David Reilly, Ken Reilly, Niall O'Donnell, Gerry Farrell, Martin Morgan, John Donaldson, Gerry Curran etc . . . Who were all good players. But just a level below these class acts we are discussing. Possibly due to the reasons you mentioned yourself - too many injuries etc . . . so never reached his ambition.

"I think players like Colm Judge have the potential to become a Louth great in the future." - yep agree with you here - great potential.

There have been a fair few good louth legends. what about flogger farrell? all star nominee, only for the offaly goalie won all ireland that year he wold of got an all star. Also others like damien reid RIP stephen melia etc. Also agree with you billbob on johnny mc donnell. couldnt believe when he 'retired' on bad circumstanes after preforming so well against kildare and to be dropped against longford. fechins could do with him i think. For the future, Colm Judge, and paddy keenan.

anyone else any suggestions??

re: o'malley

jonny mcdonald was not a louth legend, a good player he was, and shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath damien reid, stephen white, stephen melia, dan o'neill and dermot o'brien. I would even go so far to say that another clubman from st fechins matt mcdermott was more effective for louth than jonny.

up the dreadnots hope all our fans come to navan this weekend, think we've a great chance for the leinster.

A great post here.Great debate.White is one of the all time Leinster greats. Melia is still playing, absolute mamoth of a man!
But ollie mcdonnell, son of jimmy who scored 3 goals in an all-ireland final,is without a doubt in my mind one of the best gaelic players ever to play the game.He was once of the most feared forwards in leinster, plenty of class, right or left foot and could always pull something out of the bag.
Keenan, will defo be in there,he has dragged louth true some games and not to forget the likes of judge and some other old blues heads.Kelly was also a class act.

If only we could put a dream team together...what would yours be>?

Just a note - Jimmy McDonnell did not score three goals in an All Ireland final. he did get one though I think.
Score was Louth 1-9 Cork 1-7
Funnily enough Louth also wore green that day - due to the clash of colours.

My team would be something like:

1. Gerry Farrell,
2. Peter Fitzpatrick
3. Tom Conlon
4. Ollie Reilly
5. Stephen White,
6. Stephen Melia,
7. Danny Cullihan
8. Seamus O'Hanlon,
9. Kevin Behan,
10. Frank Lynch
11. Aaron Hoey
12. Ollie McDonnell,
13. Stefan White,
14. Jimmy McDonnell,
15. Damien Reid

Subs: Colin Kelly, Paddy Keenan, Colm Judge, Gerry Sheridan etc . . . .

Obviously may be a few omissions there . . .

Stefan White was undoubtedly my favourite player, you had to play the ball to him right but when you did he was lethal. Seamus O Hanlon was a great player too but picked the matches he wanted to play which was a pity. Aaron Hoey was and is a class player, pity when he was firing on all cylinders he was either full back or centre half! Colin Kelly also warrants a mention but was a bit selfish. Damien Reid was incredible a truly gifted footballer. I think our greatest player ever has to be Stephen White, way ahead of my time but the reports about him are first class. Mick O Connell (possibly the greatest ever player) said in his autobiography when picking his greatest ever 15 that he travelled to an exhibition game in Tralee where he saw the 'man from Louth Stephen White and even though he was at the end of his career he certainly didn't disappoint, all the stories I had heard were true.' In the end he doesn't pick him on the team as he says he didn't see him play enough. Cant really get a better endorsement that that!

From what I'm told "Muckle" McKeown was some player, never seen him play but my father tells me he was exceptional. Another player I don't see there and he was our first All-star nomination is Danny Nugent, obviously I can't comment on these players through seeing them play only on what I was told and I was told these men were serious footballers. My personal favourite is Stephen Melia I can't recall seeing him have a bad game for Louth in any of the positions he played in over the years!!

Stefan White left Louth to play with Monaghan so I Stephen Melia has to get the nod as greatest in recent history.
