Ulster Rankings 2008: The definitive guide

Forgot to mention there are more Irish speakers in Belfast than the rest of the country, and all the best musicians, dancers and singers come from there as well.

Having been to the Willie Clancy week in Clare in July, I can now state that without fear of contradiction.

good points tiobraid and bennybunny.. fair enough, bad.monkey.. i'l say nothing if u cant appreciate someones point of view thats up to u. in high leveel hurling many players can strike pretty well through a hook especially from distance and shorten their grip and also shooting with your back to goal around the side is probably more wat i ment than directly over the shoulder. im not taking anything away from hurlin to watch and play its a brilliant sport, i wish i was from somewhere i could play both sports but theres a huge population of hurling people who think theres no skill in football and its extremely niave and narrow minded. i kno people who wont watch gaelic because 'its slow' but love NFL soccer and even cricket!! shooting is one aspect of hurling i do honestly think when u'v got the basic is more repeatable and consistant than in football. i still love both sports, maybe u could put up ur side of the arguemeny bad.monkey, or are u just here to give abuse?

Compared to Gaelic football cricket is highly skilful. You will rarely see two balls delivered in an identical manner. And batting is a lot harder than it sometimes looks, requiring a good eye, good footwork, bravery, skill, and shot selection.

In Gaelic football you just have to hit the ball over the bar.

Books on the GAA are a bit unreliable. There was no Ulster Championship from 1892 to 1899. In 1900 Antrim are usually credited with being winners, I think they were the only entrants. Some books will not list this. 1907 is another one, most books say "No Records" but others revel that yet again Antrim are declared winners, because I think they beat Down, before the remaining teams pulled out.

As to why the finals were played in Dundalk in those years, I have no idea, unless the beer was considered to be better.

Sorry Slasher, but that is the best I can do.

Mr Brolly, I didn't post a hurling list. Read the initial post, and then you can give a considered reply.

Thanks Patrique for your effort.

P.S. I dont agree with you about Cricket being a good game. I stopped to watch them playing in Armagh City last year and while i admit that i dont know the rules, it was like watching paint drying. Not much exercise in it either imo.

Well said Derry ledd, Well done Eoghan, also not forgetting the Tyrone singer Geraldine McQueen (Peter Kay) in the Britains got the Pop factor...and possibly a new celebrity jesus christ soapstar superstar strictly on ice. Thats bound to shoot us up a bit on the ratings list.

Ok patrique. How would Antrim top it? Yes they would win all the hurling but no football! Armagh would win all the football matches seeing they havent been beaten in ulster in years - and they would win at least 5 of the hurling games bar, Down, Antrim and Derry. Surely derry would win their fair share of both games too, ranking them ahead of Antrim also?

Time to rank the Ulster counties for 2008 now that the playing season is over.

1: Antrim

2: Down

3: Derry

4: Armagh

5: Tyrone

6: Fermanagh

7: Monaghan

8: Donegal

9: Cavan

Not a lot to choose between 5,6 and 7 and could cause debate.

This was arrived at in a simple manner. Each county plays each other, once at football, once at hurling, and add up the aggregate scores. Couldn't be fairer than that, could it?

The original post. Please try to read it all, right down to the end, and then if you like you could add a comment.

And someone earlier accused me of being condescending?

I mean, it isn't the longest post ever.

A last explanation. Antrim V Armagh. Armagh win at football by say two points. That is based on the last time they played, in 2003 as Armagh marched to the final. Mind you, Armagh have slipped since then and Antrim have improved, but we will give Armagh the benefit of the doubt. Antrim win at hurling by 30, a 28 point aggregate win to Antrim.

Antrim V Tyrone. Antrim play badly and Tyrone win by 10 points at football. Same in the hurling,. Antrim play badly and win by 20. A ten point aggregate win.

Antrim V Monaghan. You tell me.

Patrique, as far as Antrim - Monaghan would go, we'd beat yous in football but Antrim would absolutely hockey us off the pitch by half-time in the hurling, god knows what the score would be if yous tried. Of course Antrim would win on aggregate, but so would they against nearly everone else. Only Derry I could see having a chance getting ahead. It's just the nature of the game that hurling have much higher scoring games and the gap between better and worse teams is much greater on the scoreboard in hurling than in football. I'd like to see someone from Leinster have a stab at a list like this to see what opinions are like, it's gets a bit of a debate going if nothing else!

I did ask that other counties provinces get involved.

Although I totally agree with Special K, I didn't realise how easy it was to wind up people, many from the one county.

At least it proves that many have no idea about Gaelic sport. "Stickball" someone said. Mind you he could be from the USA. But even then.
