SLIGO PANEL 2009

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Not sure of the panel. Heard Donegal man Donnacha Gallagher is on it after only playing this year for Marys. Someone mentioned an Easkey lad. If anyone knows it could they post it up or even the changes they know

JD, in one post you say "I know Sligo have some good players that arent on the panel and have some players on it that dont deserve to be there" then you say in your next post "Not sure of the panel".
Sounds like you are complaining for the sake of complaining.

I know Keith Raymond, Benny O'Reilly and Fiachra Coyne arent on it anyway and I would of liked to see them given a chance. Paul Durkin seen them when Calry beat Curry. From I previous post I said Pat Cawley, Gary Maye and Colm Magee as well. Are you happy with the panel Tim

Cannot see how O'Reilly is up to intercounty standard as he too often looks in rear view mirrors when a hairy corner back is chasing him. As for Raymond, he was very poor in Midfield for Sligo U21s and lacks power. His mate Coyne has the power but I'm afraid a bit of a tortoise where Gaelic Football is concerned but gets away with it in the small ball code.

Theres damn all in the county that wasn't tried before at either Junior or Senior level and virtually the 2008 panel will replicate the 2009 panel with the initial exception of O'Grady and Taylor who are going/or gone to Oz.

O Reilly looks in the rear view mirrors when someone is chasing him. Silly comment bunnyman doesnt make sense. From a Previous thread on here 2 or 3 of the regular posters had O'Reilly as one of there players who they wanted to see given a chance so its not just me. Raymond plays full forward for Calry so saying hes not good enough from a game 2 years ago when he was playing at midfield is crazy. You obviously havent seen him play this year. He got 1-7 against Farnans this year. He is one of the fastest players in the county and is 6"3 with a sweet left foot. Coyne marked D.Kelly this year and kept him to a point so saying hes not fast enough is unjustified.

I'd like to see O Reilly given a go in the likes of the FBD to prove himself. Apart from that I would expect to see a few of the Tour and Curry U20's on the panel. Didn't see much else in the U20 chanpionship that might make it.

Farrell has at least 10-20 yards on Greene with his kickouts and imagine the advantage this would have and the pressure it would relieve on our half-backs/midfield.

JD, if everyone that scored 1.7 against St Farnans is good enough , we should just put out the 15 harps lads that beat them, the 6 forwards must have scored 1.7 each.

Sadly John Deere you are not a veteran of football matches when you never heard of looking in the rear view mirrors. It is simply a way of saying the O'Reilly is perhaps not the bravest. In terms of your defence of Raymond, I think you were having a laugh when you stated he scored x amount against those perennial Owen B Hunt winners..St Farnans!. Boy, there is a big step up from playing against that poor enough outfit and then testing your skills against the likes of Galway. I think for reading your posts you might be looking through a yellow and blue coloured lens but, then again you are entitled to promote your club personnel. Unfortunately for you the majority of the team will come from Curry, Harps, Tubber and Tour. by virtue of the fact they are the leading clubs in the county. By the way a true grit player called Brendan Egan is unavailable this year as he has moved to Sweden for two years, but apparently is available for Tour's c'ship.

There is just an anti calry thing in this county I think. Geevagh, Castleconnor, St Marys, St Farnans and Drumcliffe are all in Div 2 and all have players on the county panel. Calry finished joint second in Div 2 and beat Curry and drew with Tubbercurry in Championship who are in the top 4 teams in Sligo. St Molaise and Mullinabreena have players on the panel. Just my view dont want any stupid replies. Its better for the club if no one is on there but annoying for the players who deserve a chance. We have a mayo and a donegal man on there now.

I have to agree with John Deere there must be an anti Calry Biase they beat Curry in the Championship and Durkin must have seen the skill determination and quality scoretaking of O Reilly and Raymond that day. Curry forwards were brutal in comparrison. The reality of the Bunnymans comments re O Reillys looking in the rear view mirror is Nonsense. If I had his pace Id look in the rear view mirror at backs struggling to catch me too. As regards Raymond people probably think of him as a hurler which is his first love but hes just as good a footballer saw him score 2 goals against Tubber that were top drawer, I believe Tubber lads have a DVD of the game. The new Sligo manager should get his hands on this seeing as he saw none of the championship. For the record Im not from Calry before all the guys in the long grass post messages saying Im sticking up for my clubmates. I firmly believe if O reilly and Raymond got a run in the sligo panel they would excel but if nothing else they deserve that chance. They are possible two of the fastest forwards in the county and they can score goals with ease and are strong fit physical forwards not afraid to work to win the ball even when two men are marking them as was the case in the championship.

Thanks for your comment Keyser_Soze. We all just want the best for Sligo football. If there was good scoring forwards on the Sligo team I'd be happy enough but there isnt. We need scoring forwards simple as that. Kelly is our best forward but his scoring return is bad. Think he plays half forward for Tubber so if he was a good point taker he'd be corner forward. Against Mayo Mc Partland and Gerry Mc Gowan were brought on. I think O'Reilly and Raymond would do more damage. Maybe im wrong lol

have said for years that benny should get a prolonged spell with the county no good a few fbd matches but at least a full year he is more than good enough. have not seen a great deal of redmond out side hurling but have heard great things about him. lads i think there should be a really big panel for the first few months of this year where everyone gets a chance, forget about this closed panel rubbish i think for the last few years it has BEEN HARDER TO GET OFF THE COUNTY PANEL THAT GET ON IT, that needs to be sorted and soon.

Finally someone who agrees with me. Open trial get some of the players who are past it off it or let them up their game. I think some of the people on here are afraid their club mates might be dropped. Sligeach abu

Rumor has it the sligo team are training away in curry!! Running etc.....joke! What panel is picked? Sligo football is a joke and their selection method! Kevin walshe hasnt a clue who is good in the county and to be honest nor do the selectors in my opinion! how can they?? its word of mouth...players are picked on reputation in this county and friendships too and also what club you hail from! This county doesnt go by form, or pick the player that has that extra cutting edge county class that will win you a championship game like most other countys have!

lads i too feel very let down by this whole sorry mess, for starters the process of picking the management team was too slow that left the management team no time to evaluate players based on there championship form and i feel that it is a huge mistake not holing open trials.

I'm living and playing in \Dublin now as most will know and they are not too happy with their manager either but at least the man has held about 10 trials since he has been appointed and he has also said that it would be an open panel through out the league!!!!1

we seem to have got a closed shop again which is just suicide i mean there are players around Sligo that have not a hope in hell of getting on the panel and they are plenty good enough better than most that are on it.

sad start to the 2009 season.

oh one more thing if it is true that the county team is training in curry then expect a big fine heading the county boards way as the rules of the gaa ban any collective county training in November and December
