County Final Post-Mortem

(Oldest Posts First)

Despite the low scoring and lack of excitement in General I believe Corofin will be hard to beat in the coming months. While most neutrals love to see the underdog win, yesterdays result is a great one for Galway Football. The only hope for Cortoon/Tuam was a deluge turning Pearse Stadium into a plough field. Let's face it apart from Savo, they are muckers who play an awful brand of footabll. Best of luck to Fitzy and Co in Connaught. Cortoon/Tuam, ye can take down the flageens now!!

Not a bad final. Cortoon should have taken off Warde when he got injured or atleast pulled him out the field instead of leaving him infront of the goals where he provided no movement. If Cortoon had put Savo and Martin inside and pumped long ball into them they would have won. Instead all the play was crowded in an area across the 45 yard line and with no movement inside there was no chance to play the ball long forcing the Cortoon lads into carrying ball into the wall of bodies.

Terrible game. Poor advocate for galway football especially given the perfect day for playing football.

It was a game of two sets of good backs in my opinion. Cortoon shot themselves in the foot hitting high ball into their forwards. Corofin had the experience in the end. Don't think they will progress out of Connacht, Don't have natural forwards, O Donavan and Canney only ones capable of scoring.

As far as I can remember I don't think Corofin has ever had a world class foward, past success was usually because of good defence and midfield.

have to say in it was the most negative display of football ive seen in galway county final in living memory,
the standard of passing attacking football was terrible i hope we never see the likes again .

Corofin dont care how they come, but theyve got number 12 and thats all that matters. A wounden and written off corofin is a dangerous animal. I predict they will win connaught because to be honest, there are dam all teams left that will beat them.

As bad a game football as your ever likely to see. Corofin were poor and Cortoon were worse. Not good for Galway

I disagree totally with everyone saying that corofin are a bad team because the final wasnt a spectacle of shooting and scoring. Corofin played to their strengths which was their defense and workrate. They totally nulified cortoons strengths which was their free scoring forward line. Good teams keep winning and corofin are doing that. Corofin dont have to score 1-14 to win their matches. Usually ten or 11 points will do it for them. I say, well done on a superb defensive displey. Good defense is never given the credit it deserves...

It was a poor game for the neutral but that was as much a result of Corofin's tactic of dropping down injured in order to stop any chance of Cortoon getting any sort of momentum going as it was Cortoon's inability to break down their defence. I thought david warde going off was huge for them as he would have taken the attention off savage and martyn. As for playin savage on the full forward line he has run the show for Cortoon from the 45 all year so why tuck the one forward on their team who could split a defence open with one pass away on the full forward line . Anyway Comer was gonna follow him anywhere he went so it didnt matter where he played when Comer was in that kinda form.

As for MartinJoe will ya calm down ya fool. Cortoon have brightened up the championship this year and for you to slag them about the visibilty of their support around the parish is a miserable and childish thing to do. I for one think its great they showed that much support for their parish drivin through Corofin you would barely have known they were in a final as they have become complacent about it. Trevor Burke has 9 county medals I wonder does he and the parish of Corofin realise all a Cortoon man wanted was one.
And to be honest its pretty rich a Mayo man coming on our board slaggin off a galway clubs flags, cars etc. when everyone knows ye are the biggest joke of the intercounty championship when ye get out of connacht as regards puttin the county colours on anything that stands still.

Or maybe you are just a disenfranchised (big word there martinjoe, ya'll have to get onto the auld wiktionary for that one id say) miserable galway man maybe even a tuam man given your fondness for calling Cortoon Shamrocks Cortoon/Tuam.

Either way you wont be kissin the arse of a player who has won Sam or Frank Fox down your local for a long time to come.

Thank you and good day!!!

now now ng calm down

corofin won it fair and square, and if they were falling down it was because cortoon went out with intention t rough them up,
poor corofin performance means they can only improve from here..

they'l have t or they'l be out!!

I will of course support them now they're representing Galway. I didn't say anything about Corofin themselves, just that the game itself was terrible as a spectacle. Corofin will be hard to beat as they're defensively strong but I don't think they have the firepower in attack to go all the way. To win the All-Ireland you need a couple of classy scoring forwards which Corofin don't really have. Best of luck to them anyway.

Regarding last weekends County Final I was taken aback by the poor attendance despite a lovely afternoon. I was also disappointed by the quality of the game 13 scores in a dour game. But both of those situations could have been rectified had the match been played in Tuam. There would have been easily 3 or 4,000 more there because as far as I could see there were hoards of Cortoon & Corofin people watching the game in the pubs of Tuam on telly. Secondly I must comment on the state of the pitch with players slipping & sliding & falling all over the place in puddles of water which affected the overall quality of the game. Everyone knows that Tuam is a way better pitch & there's no Atlantic wind to contend with. So why the County Board still insists on County Finals been played there is beyond me when they are losing money & our standard of football looks a farce to the rest of the nation?

chequeredflag could not agree with you more.If you were to take the two semi finals they were played in poor conditions but this did not reflect on the games or the pitch. The proof was in alan o donavans free taking,in tuam in heavy rain against caherlistrane he put on an expedition of free taken. In the county final when he was taking frees you conld see his standing foot slip as the ground gave way under him.

To my disgust and others too the county finals will be in Pearse stadium for the next 7 or 8 years.. This was a stupid agreement between the county board and pearse stadium when it was built.. Doesnt make any sense to me why dis was done but thats the galway county board for ya..

Sorry Im a bit late giving my version of the county football final but here goes anyway. I am still reading the sign outside Tuam that says "The Fox is on the way to Cortoon" but the only fox I saw since last Sunday week was a four legged lad crossing the road in front of me at Monacow bridge. There was no sign at all of the lad with the two lugs that footballers would like to be lifting over their heads towards the back end of the year. I have to agree with Johnjoe's assessment that Cortoon/Tuam were brutal and were punching above their weight even against an average Corofin team. Their tactics were wrong from the very outset in that they tried to mulloch, pull, drag, shove, etc and the last time I saw antics like that was when I was trying to get cattle up the crush before Knightly arrived for the test. The best Cortoon had to offer came from the fullback line but from No. 4 up, they were in trouble. From Midfield up they had no mobility at all and there's a round bale painted blue and white out the road and it would have been more mobile had it been left in the middle of the field above in Pearse Stadium such was their lack of momentum. In fairness to Cortoon, they beat some big teams along the way but as the saying goes, "you'll get found out in the end and you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear"
It was absolutely lovely to see Trevor Burke win his 9th county championship medal and I hope he goes on to equal the great Purcell.

Well done Corofin once again and the best of luck in the Connacht series.

Can someone explain this Cortoon/Tuam reference i keep seeing in posts relating to the county final. I was under the impression it was Cortoon Shamrocks that played in the final. The only Tuam person i can recall being on the pitch on county final day was Tony Keating doing the line for the minor final. Can someone explain? Come on Murty enlighten us with more of your wisdom
