I saw that yesterday and assumed it was an April Fools. Unbelievable that they would do something as crass as this at a time that would have been (should be) peak Gaelic games season.

I was actually about to post something like "cue the inevitable complaints from people who still insist the All-Irelands should run into August or beyond, and who ignore the benefits of the split season for club players everywhere". But I see one of them has landed already! Pikeman96 (Wexford) - Posts: 3621 - 02/04/2026 14:27:22 2664419 Link 1 |

Plenty of great hurling and football games all through August all over the country.

You need more talent to operate well in tight spaces, not less. Why do you think there's such a shift in modern coaching towards small area small sided games?

The best players come to the fore when the intensity of games ramps up and there's less space. And the less skilful lads can't handle it. Why do you think Clare and Tipp won the last 2 AI finals?

You need more talent to operate in small spaces as your advantage is being lessened all the time, that's the point. Until it's nullified at a point. Talent will still have a bearing in smaller dimensions but is lessened as the dimensions get smaller, that advantage. Barcelona can operate in tight areas in football, but it's still not ideal versus open space. So you take the space away to lessen the advantage. Yes real talent can shine here but it's not as ideal as open space. Tighter dimensions offset the talent deficit the more they are reduced. There's a reason Tyrone never went man to man with Kerry, or why KK even at their best, wouldn't play Cork in an open game of hurling! Weaker teams shut the space, rush in numbers and become physical, to overwhelm the better team, and hope they've done enough so the better team doesn't have time to exploit leftover space. Last year's hurling final an anomaly in a way. Cork a good example of the point. Generally they've now sussed the KK Limerick physical approach, can play around it, and let the raw talent shine through. KK and Limerick can't get close to them in individual and raw talent, never really could. It's why Cody adopted the physical approach he did to offset the talent deficit between them and Cork, man for man. Rush them, hit hard, and close the space basically! 32_4_1 (Meath) - Posts: 4211 - 03/04/2026 00:54:17 2664526 Link 0 |

Think you have that backwards. Cork were so far behind the other top counties in the mid 90s at hurling they had to play a style of hurling that aped football in order to compete. The only 3 AIs they have won since the early 90s were won with a Football based running game.
