Replying To Pikeman96:  "@Viking66 - meant to post this yesterday, but yours is an interesting idea. If it ever were to be proposed, I'd suggest linking the "bonus" points for having won the head-to-head match to the margin of victory in that match - e.g. if you'd won it by two points, you'd get two bonus points. If you'd won it by eight points, you'd get eight bonus points.

Would be a bit like the old "away goals count double" rule in soccer.

Possible criticism would be if the head-to-head match was very one-sided (say 15 points) and one argued that the "bonus" 15 points would make it too difficult to make up the deficit, but as you said, the head-to-head result should count for something, so it follows that a large victory there should probably count for more than a narrow one."
Thats an excellent idea. Would that be something we could decide in the county, or would it have to go to Convention?

Just on the last paragraph, if the margin of victory was 15 points it would be unlikely the team losing the head to head game would be anywhere near ahead on score difference anyway?

Am guessing you mean would it have to go to Congress, as Convention would be within the county anyway. And the answer is it depends.

If whoever was proposing it thought it was such a good idea that it should apply everywhere (e.g. National Leagues and the round-robin stages of provincial championships), then it would be for Congress and the national Rule Book.

If they just wanted it to apply in our own competitions, Wexford could deal with it all right, as the Rule Book allows counties to make their own regulations on splitting ties in league tables. The ones actually set out in the Rule Book (head-to-head, mini league, etc.) are just the defaults that apply if a county hasn't done anything different.

But for what it's worth - am unaware of any county actually doing anything different!

Well, that's kind of the point I was making. Especially in a format like tearintom suggested, where you'd only have three games anyway, making up 15 points would already be difficult so making up 30 would be nigh on impossible. But back then to the other point of how if head-to-head result is to mean something, a big win there should mean more than a small one.

I'll have a stab at it anyway.

Senior - Rapps v Fethard: It's a fair rattle for the Rapps to even be in this position. Fethard, unfortunately from their point of view, are somewhat used to it. They're still quite a dogged team (and I mean that in a good way!), and for some reason I can't quite put my finger on, I fancy them to shade this one. But it'll be close.

Intermediate - Horeswood v Ballyfad: With this one, can't help wondering - are Ballyfad seriously missing the couple of Tara Rocks players they used to have, or is it just coincidence that they've ended up here in their first year without them? And a quirk here is that these are the two "best" teams in relegation finals, in that they have 7 points between them (Horeswood 4, Ballyfad 3) while most other relegation finalists are pointless. Horeswood to win this one.

Intermediate A - Marshalstown v Taghmon: I honestly expected more from Marshalstown in this grade, and still think they're capable of better. Sorry Viking (!), but you've even outlined yourself some of the issues Taghmon have been facing this year. Marshalstown to win.

Junior - Ballyhogue v Rapps: Ballyhogue are another of last year's winners who could drop straight back down, and a double whammy for them is how they've ended up in the Intermediate Football relegation final too. Realistically, most of their focus will be on preserving football status, and I fancy them to do that. But if they want this one too, I think they can win it as well. When the chips are down like this at this level, would always be inclined to favour one club's first team over another club's second team, particularly if that other club's first team hasn't been going particularly well either. Could be a bad weekend for the Rapps.

Junior A - Cloughbawn v Rathnure: Cloughbawn to win this one, largely because it's Rathnure's third team we're talking about here. No disrespect whatsoever to the lads involved because this was my own level for a long time, but they're really a Junior B outfit who went well there last year and won it, but who've clearly struggled when up a grade, and whose 'natural' home is probably still Junior B.

I'll probably end up with zero out of five correct.

Ill have a stab also so, but like you I could be wrong on 5 counts too.
Fancy Fethard myself, but I fear there could be a big kick in Rapps. They surely dont want 2 consecutive relegations from Senior in both codes. Expecting a fierce battle tbh, not high scoring.
Horeswood have improved as the year has gone on, and players have returned from injury. Sean Nolan is a huge loss though. Offsetting that is the loss of Breen from the amalgamated team, a seriously under rated hurler. Think Horeswood will shade it.
Taghmon have played pretty well in patches of all their games except the Shels game, but have been crippled by absences from last year, never mind the 4 lads who are still in Oz. Marshalstown havent been too bad in most of their games either, look to be an honest hard working team, Michael Kinsella is very good. Obviously hoping Taghmon win.
Ballyhogue just haven't looked fit all year, and are missing a couple from last year also with injuries. I hope they can find something extra for the game up in Farmleigh, but Im not sure its there in them this year.
Big rivalry game to finish up, to quote the lads over the Atlantic. Should be a right battle, maybe Cloughbawn might shade it as they have had less first team injuries this year, so likely will have lost less players stepping up? I get that this is Rathnures 3rd team, but they've had quite alot of lads who would ordinarily be seen as 2nd teamers playing on their 1st team. These wouldve had to be replaced by lads off this team. Its really a credit to them, bearing in mind their population, that they had 3 teams above Junior B level at all this year.
So,
Fethard
Horeswood
Taghmon
Rapps
Cloughbawn
But wouldn't be at all surprised if Ive got all 5 wrong.

What a brilliant game of hurling the relegation match. First really good game of the year. End to end. Was hoping it would go to extra time. Fethard got the bit of luck with the late goal and Rapps missing the free. First time since 1972. They probably have been lacking in bringing new players in the past few h years but no doubt they should bounce back up. Did Rathnure the world of good when they went down. Cian byrne was exceptional throughout.

In intermediate Horeswood go down, after a few years in intermediate but probably have been one of the poorer teams in that grade.

Very entertaining game and both teams gave it their all. Cian was outstanding, but his brother chipped in with a vital 1-1 right at the death too, the point as good a strike as you'll see all year. Thought Eoin Whelan was excellent too, McGrath should be on the blower to him in the off-season as he has the rare combo of size and skill that Wexford lack compared to the top dogs.

Felt Fethard carried the ball better through the lines and aside from Foley and Mahon from frees even disregarding the difficult late one he missed in the end, less of the Rapps lads stood out individually overall.

I do think there is a tier system in the top two grades in the club at the minute. Martin's, Rathnure, Naomh Eanna and Shels at the minute are in their own little mini-group as the top sides. Anne's have fallen from that group slightly this year but on their day are as good as those four. But the rest of the senior sides, along with the top eight intermediate teams would probably beat each other on any given day, especially with the amount of running games teams adopt. Cloughbawn have probably the most talented hurlers in the intermediate grade, but they'd be a yo-yo type of side, and got pipped by Fethard last year, who just about edged Mellows in the QF. It really is quite paper-thin between about 14/15 teams.

Rapps don't have the same calibre of players Rathnure have though. With Kevin Foley and Liam Ryan getting on too, thought they were better than that but not to be. Intermediate in both codes now nobody would have predicted that 5 years ago. Still think they will have enough to come back up if cloughbawn go senior this year.

Fethard stay up and deservedly so their workrate through the whole game was excellent, cian byrne with 1.13 cillian got 1.1 in last minute or so i thought daire barden was excellent too, they were the standout players for me but all fethard lads stepped up when they were needed i said after seen fethard in ross against the martins that it would be some achievement for them to stay up but credit where its due, they always seem to get it over the line when backs are against the wall

Well, I got one out of five predictions correct for the Relegation Finals, and even that one (Fethard beating Rapps) was the one I was least sure about and where I came closest to going the other way.

Still, one more than I expected. And good job I'm not a gambling man. :D

Also just to show how poorly I did - the one I was surest about (Cloughbawn to beat Rathnure's third team in Junior A) was the one I was most wrong about, as Rathnure ended up winning by 21 points!

Again - good job I'm not a gambling man.

I remember reading an article about the newly promoted sides in each grade after round 4. Played 20; won 0; drew 2 lost 18.

Funny that only 2 of the 5 sides ended up relegated Ballyhogue and Marshallstown and I would have backed Ballyhogue to win their relegation final.

Went in to watch Rathnure and Cloughbawn as thought the rivalry of the 2 parishes might make for intriguing viewing. How wrong I was. Rathnure could have beaten Cloughbawn by a lot more and wasted at least 3 great goal opportunities. Like another poster said testament to them for having 3 teams over Junior B grade.

Don't know what to make of Rapps and Fethard. Fethard again showing what they can do when they're backs are to the wall and just seem to pull it out of the bag on so many occasions. I was toward the other end of the field and I thought the ball was just wide but Rapps were adamant it was over. Any other posters close to the free taker see if it was over or not? Fethard probably deserved to win on the day as I felt they were the better side.

Sad to see the Rapps going down and worrying for the town for hurling in general. The rapps 2nd team constantly down at the bottom of junior last couple of years and when Kevin Foley and Liam Ryan go from their First team be hard to see them getting back to the heights of 5 or 6 years ago. Lot of other influences with soccer and rugby big in the town might draw players away. I would have the same fear for the Harriers when Chin hangs up his boots. Hurling in New ross is nearly dead. Luckily Gorey still competitive in Senior. I can still remember a time when country clubs had to amalgamate at underage as the towns teams were so strong. How times have changed.
