Last weekend's Munster club final gave us that rarest of things, a two-pointer after the 70 minutes are up that takes a team from losing by a point to winning by a point. Its the way rugby is too. Makes for an exciting passage of play though.

It also happen fairly frequently in American Football - if the ball is already in play when time is up, then the game continues until the ball goes dead. I think it is a good rule. Previously, the final whistle was entirely at the referee's discretion and there was no consistency. Whenever a big game ended with a levelling point from a free deep in injury time, there were always accusations that the ref "played for a draw". Now everyone knows exactly where they stand when the buzzer goes. Also, it makes sense that a free awarded after the buzzer must be allowed to be taken as otherwise the team that is leading when the buzzer sounds would just need to immediately commit a foul to end the game.

Yes Viking but that still does not make it right. The idea was to take the time out of the refs hands. Now it's in the players hands. I can't wait for the day a team is losing by a cricket score but keep kicking it around for half an hour. The other team don't care because a score makes no difference. You can go home and milk the cows. The game is over when time is up and the hooter goes.

Hockey has it right. Even if the shot is taken and the puck goes in the net it has to have crossed the goal line before the hooter. No ambiguity. The game was over before the score occurred.

Revisiting this in light of An Ghaeltacht's recent exploits in the club championship. I think not one but twice they turned a one-point deficit into a one-point winning margin with the last score of the game. But I think they were both from frees, so we're waiting for the first instance of a two-pointer from play to win a game from a losing position with a late two-pointer.
