Jack O Connor is complaing about (and blaming Kerrys inability to go back to back) the Kerry Club championships.

Because of how they structure it, it allows Kerrys 9th best club enter the intermediate provincial club championship and its 25th best club enter the provincial junior championship.
A scenario that means they are essentially allowing a senior club represent them in intermediate and an intermediate club into junior.

The result of which means that Kerrys champions at intermediate and senior, generally progress to All Ireland stages at least.
Add that to Dingle doing so well last year and Kerry have a problem with a number of player playing all year round.

Ignoring the fact that it was within Jacks gift to give those players 2 months off league duties and sacrifice league and provincial ambitions (as they mean nothing in the grand scheme of all ireland wins), the problem is a self inflicted one.

However, the senior club championship continues to impact the performance of the intercounty players whos club is successful in it. In the vast majority of cases (St Brigids, Dingle, Errigal Ciaran, Glen, Kilcoo, Cuala, Kilmacud Crokes) the intercounty players who play year round end up suffering a range of injury problems in the following seasons, struggling to impact the intercounty all ireland due to injuries (Tom O Sullivan, Paul Geaney, the Canavan brothers, Con O Callaghan, Shane Walsh etc).

It is noticeable, that despite having a highly paid S&C man in the county set up, every county team ends up with the same problem, no off sean for 2 years and persistant injury problems or lower performance levels for the county team.


Now that Mayo havr shown that winning the all ireland can be done by assembling a team in May and performing for only 2 months, perhaps these players who progress in All Ireland club championships can be given an off season in February and March, pre season in April and be introduced to intercounty football in May. Thus sparing them the slog of league and provincial championships, with proper consideration for their welfare.

Its a fairly obvious injury/performance trend, yet it continues every year regardless of the county

Division 2 counties can't exactly take the league lightly. The league providing All Ireland qualification is popular. I don't see it changing which is fair enough if that's what the majority want. The Errigal Ciaran contingent missed a large part of the league last year. Seems a bit drastic to use the league for direct qualification. County players are back up their clubs for championship.

Div 2 is hardly some hotbed of quality football

Dubs will not fall so low as to miss out on All Ireland series qualification. Cavan on the other hand - seem happy to stay in Div 2 and not do much else besides. Tyrone did the same this year, saving themselves for championship

Kildare and Offaly got relegated - but you couldn't describe them as good teams. They were so bad, they made it easier for everyone else.

Roscommon shook up Division 1 and the Connacht championship. Teams will emerge to shake up Division 2. If the majority are content with league qualification, so be it.

Tyrone will have a big say in D2 next year for sure.

Expect Tyrone could be All-Ireland contenders next year. They actually were this year in the end beating Mayo and almost taking out Kerry. Mayo have shown that anyone out of top 8 teams that show enough form and improvement throughout the summer have a great chance. It alao shows that league superiority doesn't make much of a difference come championship.

How are things going in each county's club football championship.

Ballina are out in Mayo, leaving it to be a Crossmolina v Westport - with the return of Kobe for the county final being touted around.

Any new team coming through eslewhere?

Looks like Brids v Pearses will be the Final unless they meet beforehand.
Boyle middlin so far (without Enda).
Ros Gaels seemed to wake up in 2nd half of match 2. Don't know if it's all coming together or opposition poor.

Moycullen still favourites for Galway with Salthill/Knocknacarra as 2nd.

Corofin then a bit behind as 3rd.

Another gap then for the rest of the pack as Tuam Stars lost to Annaghdown last week.
