Women, Ladies or Girls?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

While I applaud the teams and players who contested the all-Ireland finals at Croke Park yesterday, why do we persist in misnaming women's football as "Ladies Football". It is as if we want it to be equated with golf, tennis or some other sport with post-colonial pretensions and trappings? I keep expecting the players to come out in white gloves and hats.

Is this a silly attempt at humour Borderboy or are you just splitting hairs?

I am a female poster who as a member of both organisations was at the ladies and mens finals in football and I also attended the camogie and hurling finals. I have done a lot of work from coaching and committee level in my club and also for the NGBs. Are you saying that I didn't deserve any of my tickets???

Ladies/Women in many counties are very involved in the GAA, including past winners of the Club Person of the year award. Nearly all of our qualified coaches in my own club are female, and females take an interest in hurling and football.

Probably Wise Guy, because women are people, just like you.

Yes you are a sexist person, wise guy, as is the person who named the female version of gaelic football "ladies football" rather than "women's football".

i knew the ladies on the board would get the wrong end of the stick..... but just look at the poor attendances at the female games. Im not saying anyone is not intitled to tickets. i'm talking about generally girls between 18-30, not all girls 18-30, ie: my own sister who announced the day before the football final she wanted a ticket and wanted someone else to find it, then sunday past she asked what where all these games on tv!

Life is unfair. The deserving are not always rewarded. All Ireland Finals are there for everyone.... deserving or not.

Firstly wise guy, u are being a twat here. now thats out of the way; do not compare every lady supporter to that girl that was wondering why the matches were on. Secondly, When you play for club / county like some of us do / have done, and put in 2 nites a week with club / 3 with county and throw in the odd appearance for college if needed, then talk to me about Ladies in sport.
i know girls who drive from Dublin / tyrone to galway 2 nites a week for training, and turn around drive back and go to work. so do not try to be funny on here, and post ridiculous comments, when you dont even realise the effort that goes in. Do not think for a second that ladies football is not as hard as mens committment.

People like u just infuriate me. why be such a lad, can you not appreciate a good display of football when you see one. Valerie Mulcahy scored 3-02 on sunday, Cora staunton has scored nearly 4-30 throughout the season.

And as for shinners. Your from mayo. Enough said. Perhaps you could do that ironing while everyone else is in croke park and and your still dreaming of mayo winning.

There are Men who never set foot inside a GAA pitch that got tickets to the all -ireland to see waterford play and they were people who probally gone to every match with years that couldn't get a ticket. in your opininion only girls did this. yes there are girls who go to matches just because their boyfriend has an interest in it so they go along. likewise they happen to be girls who are sport mad and go out with guy who just tags along. my hubby in point. when i first met him he never went to a match and usually not bother now but he goes because i love it .most of the Matches are at weekend ,if he whats to spend time with me then he has go to the match . So go back to your cave and stop gerenalisng.

Can someone translate Crossbar's last offering for me please???

I take it the 'cross' in your name is cross as in angry - very angry - even very very angry! Shinners is a very decent poster from Longford who has a gra for Dublin - dunno what your beef is with her. Can you post again and outline exactly what is bugging you - its not clear.

Judging form that rant i would say cross bar is a woman (what you said would suggest it also). BTW crossbar I think you,ve totally got the wrong end of the stick with wise guys comments. What he measn is there were more ladies at the mens final than at the ladies final (I think thats what he means anyway)

Ah got it now CrossBar! You are quoting Shinners for something the WUM called WB said! Read the posts properly before you insult one of our more esteemed female posters please - especially when you are in mid rant about people insulting women!

This reminds me of someone suggesting a while back that young children shouldn't be allowed at All-Ireland finals and similar big games, as they were just taking up seats from older people who would better appreciate the game! What a ridiculous suggestion! Everyone has the right to be at a final like that.
