Well the back door has only existed since around 2000/2001, and Dublin won the Leinster title in 02, 05, 06, 07, 08, 09 and then evening from 2011-2024. So they had very little opportunities to ever go through a back door because they usually won Leinster. Even if they do win it this year, it's not the same as going through the back door because the format is completely different. However you stated that the "backdoor/second chance system" helped strong teams such as Dublin. This system has never helped Dublin(b4 2025) a fact. Your statement quoting Dublin as a beneficiary of the "backdoor/second chance" system is incorrect, 100% incorrect. sligo joe (Dublin) - Posts: 939 - 06/06/2025 13:37:07 2615329 Link 0 |
read it again and your "quote" - you'll notice I didn't say what you think I said. The system helped dublin by keeping them apart from other strong counties until all Ireland semi final stage - combined with the provincial rotation - Dublin could only really play Kerry (the other team with a handy draw) every third year (outside of finals). So the structure was of benefit to Dublin overall - not because they wont all ireland through the back door - but because the structure was designed to keep them away from good teams for as long as possible.

Dublin had exactly the same opportunity to use the back door as any other team, just didn't need it.

Louth should win comfortably but a Louth - Clare draw would see Louth advance on only 1 point. Wins for Armagh and Dublin next weekend would see Galway advance on 1 point. Some people want to retain the current format despite these ridiculous scenarios that could arise!! legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 8939 - 09/06/2025 12:54:36 2616083 Link 0 |
Very few want it retained Legend… maybe a few dimwits like the deluded basketball lover but more importantly those at the top have listened to people like us in the know and have decided enough is enough…. far too many pointless games with teams still in the championship after loosing 3 games in a row..

You could also have a team eliminated on 3 points or top a group on 3 points. Most of us can do the maths, this isn't some amazing revelation. 3 teams are going through from groups of 4. Tyrone got relegated from the league this year in 7 points. It's actually possible for a team to be relegated on 8 points. It's also possible for a team to make a league final on fewer than 8 points. Ireland qualified from a World Cup group in 1990 without winning a match. A team could lose lose 8 matches and win the champion's league. Plenty permutational possibilities in sport a mhac. Strokestown won the Ros SFC in 2022 but only got 1 point in the Group. We still have the same system. Seanfanbocht (Roscommon) - Posts: 2412 - 09/06/2025 13:24:06 2616103 Link 0 |
The Offaly championship last year had a group stage where noone was eliminated. Everyone advanced to the knockout stages anyway. Group placing was used for seeding only!

The round robin was created to give more teams more games, as prior to its introduction, Kerry, Dublin, Mayo and Tyrone had dominated the semi finals from 2013 to 2021. Their continuously longer season was allowing them develop their players, game plans etc all summer while most others had the odd good season but mostly spent their summers with their clubs. tirawleybaron (Mayo) - Posts: 1445 - 09/06/2025 15:10:02 2616144 Link 1 |
Wasting your time coversing with those Walter Mittys on Gaelic Footbal topics. Italy actualy won the World Cup without winning a Group game. Championships are rightly decided over a period of time not on lopsided provincials knockouts like we used to have. This formula evens the playing field much more and gives teams more games against similar strength of opposition. Then again one has to attend the games to understand the benefits of the present system. By the end of this years championship there will only be a small minority who will want to change. How can anyone not be happy with a system that is bringing us the schedule of games we have this weekend.

Kilkenny have something similar in their senior hurling championship.

Bizarre enough format. I suppose with inter county players coming back into the fold, everyone is road tested before knockout.

Eamonn Sweeney makes the case in today's Indo that KK should be in Munster so they could be battle hardened for the AI Series just like their peers. He states that Munster's 'Big 5' should linked with Leinster's 'Top 3'. It's a fair point - but you can't cut the rest adrift either. omahant (USA) - Posts: 3296 - 09/06/2025 20:43:35 2616247 Link 0 |
7 of the Division 1 counties from this year are in two groups. The 6 coming out of those groups will be battle hardened. Those groups are like the scramble to remain in Division 1.

Correct Legend but it won't be flawed for much longer much to the disappointment of the deluded.. Practically a round of challenge games this weekend bar a couple…
